 Post subject: head gasket update...
PostPosted: Fri Jul 25, 2003 11:35 pm
Well guys, I've found out why my head gasket blew. Some previous idiot working on the truck had no idea how to tighten the head bolts. They were badly torqued everywhere. And one bolt must've had over 300 pounds of torqe on it. MY buddy and I could not get it off! We used a monster impact drill, the best and biggest ratchet available,(it was big..), and we even resorted to trying to heat it up and then try. We couldn't get that damn bolt out. So we ended up drilling a hole down the center of the bolt and knocking the top of the bolt off. It was a last resort.

So now I'm asking if any of you guys have an extra head bolt lying around you'd like to hook me up with. I haven't checked the local parts stores yet but I have my doubts. There's not a lot of parts around that you can conventionally get any more. It would be awesome if someone could help me out...let me know what you guys think.
Thanks

okok I actually have no idea how many pounds was on the bolt. 300 just sounded like a big number.... 8) It wasn't that I couldn't pull harder I just didn't want to break something.

i had the same problem when i blew the first head gasket on mine, couldnt find bolts ANYWHERE...except the dealer (izuzu ofcourse) and they was like $12 a bolt 8O and the damn dealer was 2hrs away. i said screw it and bought another junk motor just for the head bolts

ended up needing the front cover too, so it was all good 8)

btw, we had to use a air hammer to chisle out the washer under the bolt to release the torque. we had already tried to drill it and use a ez-out.......yeah right, SNAP!!! SHIT!!!!....ever try drilling thru a ez-out?

I bet I can tell ya which bolt it was. The one right between the 2nd and 3rd exhaust ports on the exhaust manifold side perhaps? That bolt has two things going against it. All that heat from the two exhaust ports side by side going by it, and it goes through a water jacket. Water, plus bolt, plus extremes of heat and cool (from the water) adds up to seized bolt.

I've been able to get them out in all but one case. That was the last head I just took off. The head of the bolt stripped out after I had my dad with a pipe on one side of the T-bar socket handle and me on the other with a pipe trying to turn it. Drilled the head off the bolt and pulled the head, then filed the bolt square and it came right our with a crescent wrench with no torque to hold it in. (And a little hammering, just for good measure)

I think you actually might have better luck next time if you put some sort of sealer on the very top bit of threads, to help keep water out of the thread area.

Yea I know, called the dealers in Canada. They don't even have books for the damn thing. Called a bunch of places in the states and it's not looking too good. The last place I got a number for was the chevy dealer itself. But they were just closed so I won't be able to talk to them till tomorrow morning...
But I don't have to now thanks to tumwatertaz. You're awesome man.

Anyway, thanks for the input guys. Don't know what I'd do without you :scatter: [/quote]
