What is the GEN light on the dash and what does it mean when it comes on and stays on?

For me it used to glow and then I had a bad battery cable. It could be bad grounds somewhere on the truck also? Most likely it is something in the electrical system or bad grounds. This topic has been covered before, so there should be some info if you do a search. Maybe try a search for "gen light".

The GEN light being on means that your charging system isn't doing it's job (This turns into a big, expensive job if you don't get on it. Batteries can be fried. Stereos aren't big fans of it either...) Try having the alternator tested. If it's the same as it was with my truck, the regulator (that big shiny box on the inside of the front left fender, just fo'ard of the fuse box) is bad. Shop around tho, the first shop I tried to buy one from said something like $70 for original replacement, but the next shop I tried sold me an aftermarket one for about $30...
Good luck!

I agree with Mokadeth. The Gen light could come up for several different reasons. My came one with my regulator fuse blowing. I would do a search and see what any other posts have the same sings that yours has.

Yeah, I was driving along and stopped for gas, once I strted again the gen light came on and around 40-45 the engine would act like it's running out of fuel...which I know is not the case I just put in 7.5 gallons. This regulator y'all speak of, this sounds like it fits the description of problems...sputtering engine, gen light on, methnks you have helped me much!!! I will be taking it in to get tested first thing in the morning

Uhh... just for general information, your truck was running out of gas. The fuel pump relay has a cutout that is activated by the alternator. If the alternator is charging the battery, the fuel pump is working.
It's a safety deal... keeps the fuel pump from pumping gas when the engine is off.

i still have my GEN light on and i have replaced almost everything i could think of. i have almost rewired the whole damn truck.
i had to hook the fuel pump up to a switch in the cab because every time i would put it a new fuel pump the wiring would just fry it. but im pretty sure the GEN light comes on whenever you have a bad ground, open wire, or a component is not functioning right. so if i were you get a test light and a multi-meter and just start testing everything.

As stated, usually it means the generator isn't working shortly followed by the fuel pump stopping. A dim glow can be the fuse box. They are prone to corrosion between the riveted together pieces leading to all sorts of flaky electrical problems. After 25 years of problems, I soldered my 77's and now it runs better than when a few years old.

it could be as simple as a fuse. Mine came on when one of my fuses blew.

Did you fix it?

Mine was flickering. I took the caps of the battery and found the electrolyte was low, so I added water. Then I put it on the battery tender to charge it all up. No more light. So the GEN light (marked C on some trucks) seems to come on when there is low voltage in the system. If one side of the bulb is grounded ... it will come on. Otherwise there should be 12 V on both bulb terminals and it won't light up. No charging puts low voltage on the alternator side of the light and it comes on. At least I think that's what happens ...

The light turns on when the alternator is drawing power, like during startup, and after the alt. starts charging the system, the light turns off. Some sort of deal that has to do with where the voltage regulator is getting its power from.
