ok i got a straight axle for my 80 luv it come from a 85 im looking to put 33x12.5x15 that will turn into 35x12.5x15 thornbirds under it while the wife isn't looking so i was think of doing about 8 inch of lift to have some travel for those tires to move. and i was woundering what to i need to to do to make it from ifs to straight what parts any one suggests and what gears i shall go with to turn those tires with the stock motor with a port polish head and a weber carb and the smoog pump taken off or what ever that thingy is thing i want to be able to crawl just about any thing and this is not a daily driver this thing is never going on the high way or any other fast speed places since some one told me to only run leaf springs

for the love of us all, please please please, i beg of you, DO NOT BUY THORNBIRDS!!! you will be thoroughy dissappointed, on every level..

back on topic: (you will be dissappointed with thornbirds on a wheeler only rig)

get some toyota rear leaf springs, they push your axle forward on the chassis, flexy as all get out and keep the truck low. or rancho 44044 leafs are another good/common leaf spriung that people get.

do a high steer setup from trail gear on it, get 5.29 gears from bobby long (he is close to you ) they're cryoed and cheaper than a set from randy's ring and pinion. might i suggest you pcik up a set of longfields while you are there too! he is a great guy to deal with.

with 5.29s they will run your motor a bit high with 33s, but with 35s it will put you back close to where you are stock (prolly a little lower geared than stock )

What other parts are you looking for?

but please, do not get thornbirds, if you must, then do it, but there are MANY other CHEAPER options out there for a strictly trail rig.

i wish there were some 4x4 luvs in colorado but i inly know one guy with a luv but its a 2wd with a v8. but if you guys ever come down to colorado let me know

also what do you think of the goodyear mtr's (mud terrains)?

ok well i have quesrions on how should i set it up if you could show pics how the leafs are mounted on

the MTR's are pretty good, my friend has a set of 35's and really enjoys them, they do pask up with mud a bit quicker than my 36" Iroks do, that's just because of the tighter tread pattern compared to the Irok. But they perform good in the snow, air down/fold well (my friend runs his at 8-10 psi) not the strongest sidewall, but they are still really good. I honestly have nothing bad to say about them, they run a little small for the rated sizes, no biggy though, most tires do anyways. i compare these tires to the BFG KMs, i feel they are softer than the KMs but, there is give and take with that, softer tire, wont last as long, harder tire (KM) will last longer... if you have any question about something in particular, just shoot me a PM. I'd be happen to explain/help.

Ok, do you want, front mounted shackles or rear? I would suggest rear (stupid jeeps anyways!)

Are you handy with a welder/grinder/sawzall/etc.??? or are you just learning this stuff brand new?

The leafs are going to be mounted in the same fashion as the rear. do a search for SAS'd trucks. Go to trail gear or Marlin Crawler's websites and search for the SAS kits they have and that'll show you what stuff looks like.

Here is a pic of my truck, this setup has been going strong for 5 years now, and seen it's share of abuse.
