Here's the wiring diagram for '79/'80....

http://www.luvtruck.com/PDF/Series9&10.pdf

Take a look at the 'pre' relay beside the fuel pump relay. Also, a couple of conditions have to be met in the foot pedals. There is a set of black/white wires on the clutch that need to be operational. I think you may have to push the clutch in to close the switch.

As an aside, you can hotwire the fuel pump to make it run by running a hot lead to the keyed side of the ballast resistor and then just jumper the black/white clutch wires together. I don't recommend bypassing the safety equipment, but for testing, that is what I'd do. Then it's a matter of working your way backwards through the wiring diagram.

Also, make sure to check your Voltage Regulator fuse. I popped mine while t-shooting and got 'bit' on that one. It's not only frustrating, it's pretty embarassing.

Good luck, there are several folks here who are more savvy than I on the electrics on these trucks. Hope this helps some...

Is your alternator charging ok? If the alternator stops charging the fuel pump stops.

ok here is what we have so far, bypassing the relay with a hot wire pumps the pump. i have changed the relay i had and extra one and it didn't change anything so i bought another still nothing, i know that sometimes new parts don't mean they work, how many post are suposed to be hot on the relay. no matter what i do i only get one hot post. the alternator is charging fine, and as for the clutch pedal relay the truck cranks fine so wouldn't that only be an issue if the truck wouldn't crank? or am i wrong on that. any advise is welcomed. thanks Marty

You are correct. The clutch switch would only keep the starter from operating. When the engine starts, the alternator starts charging, closing a relay inside the voltage regulator. This then sends 12V down a white/w red stripe wire to the fuel pump relay, energizing it. At least that is how it is supposed to work. I'm assuming the relays and regulator are all stock and the proper ones that belong there.----hope this helps.
