Hey guys,

Well i bought my first LUV. It's a 1981 version, and so far its been pretty good. Miled right out and everything is still working....well almost everything.... It's got the 1.8L Izusu engine under the hood, and the timing chain went. I took the valve cover off (first straght four i ever owned, im used to saying "valve covers") and took a peak at eh timing gear. Theres supposed to be a chain on top of that gear, and it wasn't there 8O !! So i got the light out and started shining for it down below in the darkness, and sure enough there it was piled up nicley beside the lower cam gear. So im going to head to the parts store to buy new gears and chain, but i have just a few questions. How do you get access to the lower gear, its imposibble from the top, as there is only like a inch of space the whole way down??? Is there a cover plate down there somwhere that pops off so i can access it??? And also, this is the first four banger i have ever encountered, im a small block big block kind of guy, and these 'extra small blocks' are a tad differetn from REAL....engines. Any kind of info on this would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks!! Diagrams are cool too!!!

On this particular motor, you have to take off the crank pulley and the entire front cover. You then have to get a gear puller and pull the oil pump gear (it is only hand tight). You can then take off the lower timing gear.

to get to the lower gear you have to pull the oil pan off. then there is a front aluminum cover that unbolts its pretty much the entire front of the engine. i don't remember if u have to pull the head but i know there are to bolts on the front of the head that are holding this on. but u pretty much are pulling the entire front end of the motor apart. thats the only way i know of to get to it. hop this helps. matt

Something to consider is that the 1.8L is not very happy with the valve timing not in sync with the pistons. You may have a lot more damage than just the chain. I think you probably want to pull the head before spending any money on a chain. You probably have some bent valves and possibily damage to the tops of some pistons.

The to change the timing chain you need to remove the water jacket from the front as has been said above, which also requires that you at least loosen the oil pan. Basically you are already looking at pulling the motor pretty much apart so you'd save some skinned knuckles and effort to pull the motor and get it out where you can work on it, if that is possible.

this is what happend to mine :(

on thing that hasnt been addressed is removing the hood..its only 4 bolts and makes things SOOOO much easier

true taking the hood off is pretty much alot easier but the way the hood is verticle makes it easier than a normal hood. 1 more thing is that u might have to pull the oil pan all the way off because of the oil pick up which is basically impossible to take off with the oil pan on. but u might be able to wedge it out. but the easiest thing is to pull it all the way. matt

Well, if your a small and big block kinda guy like ya said then i would say that is what you need to stick to! Man if i had a two wheel drive! Anyways good luck!

if the timing chain broke while it was running then the motor is going to be umm, perty busted up. Dont be suprised if the valves are bent and theres a good amount of scaring on the pistons. If you a smallblock guy just pull the 1.8L and drop a 350 in there... :twisted:
But if you going to salvage the 1.8L the stuff said above is what you have to do.
