Last night on way home, a teenager pulled out in front of me and t-boned my passenger side in my 80 4x4. Smashed lower cab in, passenger door and folded front of bed in. Probably a total as far as his insurance is concerned. Pisses me off, I just redid entire interior! Luckily it still drives fine other than air leaks at passenger door+ looking terrible.... :(

Hire a real good shyster lawyer and sue his little butt off...that really sucks!

Make them get you another truck in just as good condition. and don't let them try to give you "blue book" price for it either.

After all - it was a customized classic old truck he ran into...and it's not like the darn things grow on trees everywhere.

And don't forget to make them let you keep your old truck for parts.

BTW...my insurance guy just had me document all the time and money I have invested in my Luv, plus he had me take a bunch of pictures. I now pay a bit more for insuring it as a classic or collectable vehicle - but IMHO it's worth it to not have to worry about getting screwed over if it gets wrecked or stolen.

I highly recommend that everyone here does it. There's a local guy in town that had a beautiful full-sized 72 Chevy shortbed stepside that he showed for years which he had literally thousands of dollars invested into.

That is - untill one day he was driving it and it got totalled in a 3 car pile-up on the freeway. He just had liability insurance on it, and none of the stuff he had done to it was documented - so he got royally screwed over in the insurance settlement.

Plus while it sat at the tow yard - a bunch of his stuff was stolen off of it - so he never has put another truck back on the road.

I hope everything works out for the best for ya Kevin!

And I'm really sorry to hear about your poor old truck. :(

It was my 80 daily driver that I just redid the interior, not my lifted 79 thank god.... Taz, you are a 100% right! Good information. I am actually doing the appraisal stuff on my 79, like your talking about. I won't be able to make it in for estimates till next week because of long work hours. Will try to post some pics this weekend. Thanks, guys!

Hey guys...I've been wondering about the establishment or "True" value for these trucks. I've tried to find a Classic or Antique Auto Appraiser around here and haven't had much luck. Someone like that could put a more accurate value on our trucks without being on the side on the Insurance company. I've kept copies of as may luv trucks as I could that have sold on ebay through the the last year or so to begin an attempt to prove a pattern and the percentage of increase in the value.

I've thought that being able to prove a consistent increase in the percentage
of sales for both whole truck and individual parts might eventually provide a catalog of potential value.

Not sure if this is making sense but perhaps ya'll get the gist of what I'm saying.........

I'm smellin what you're steppin in... that's a good bunch of info and data to collect. Sure would help to prove your side in a insurance argument.

In my case...my insurance agent asked me what a stock truck the same year normally sells for - plus what the total of all of my parts and time I've invested in it is worth. He also told me to keep a file with all of my reciepts for my parts and a record of how many hours I've worked on it (without including normal maintenance stuff), and then had me shoot a lot of pictures showing as much of the truck as possible.

Then after he looked at all of that stuff, he came up with this big amount that it would cost to replace it(which I sure as hell would never pay for it...lol) and charged me to insure it for that much.

There are some days I'm tempted to take it out in the boondocks, torch it, and report it stolen - just to cash in...lol

you can always go stated value also if you wanted it insured for $10,000 they will but you pay for what a 10k car would be

pictures don't really show extent of damage, but estimate does. One estimate of nearly $4200.00. Will get another next week if possible. Gathering info off internet and craig's list to establish a value of truck. His insurance company will for sure total it. I just want a fair price for truck, because I will be stuck with the damage until I fix it with a parts truck...

When they total it, they will probably try to BS you into believing you have to give them the truck to get paid - which sure as hell isn't true.

You have the option to buy it back from them for parts, or to have them deduct scrap value for it from your settlement and let you keep it for parts.

Either way - don't let the adjuster take it out of your hands or they will scrap it.

Besides....it can be fixed.

Just give me a few hours alone with your truck and about 15 gallons of bondo, a roll of bailing wire, a case of duct tape, three or four blue tarps....and it'll look just like new.

Here's some published collector info on approximate values on these trucks. I've found this site is pretty reliable for real (not eBay) auctions, but a bit high for personal sale value.

Good luck Kevin, really sorry to see it bashed in like that. Sounds like you are ok, the truck can be replaced or repaired...

you should be able to get it fixed...totalled or not
I would think anyways.
It has sentimental value and is repairable.

Just looks like body damage.

Dont forget to ask about a retnal car.... the other insurance company has to pay for it, and well worth getting to drive a new truck around.
