So now I've fixed all the problems I can find, and I am officially stumped.

When I got the truck the head gasket was blown. So I changed the gasket, changed the oil (which was indescribably nasty) Checked all the vacuum fittings and tried to start her up.

Got lots of fuel leaking out of all sides of the stock carb.

No worries- I got this fancy Weber on my spare motor. I'll just throw that on. So I did, built a de-vice to connect the throttle cable and tried again. Spins and spins and spins, but won't start. It will occasionally kinda cough like it's trying- but no joy. So I checked the plugs, checked for fire, and kinda eyeballed the timing (timing light I have doesn't work with points ignition, I guess). The dist. rotor is just reaching the plug tower on the cap at 8-12degrees BTDC. There is a nice spark on #1 plug. There is plenty of separation between the points when at the tip of the cam in the dist. Shooting WD40 into the intake while trying to start her doesn't have any effect. I am going to try setting the points this weekend, but frankly I don't think that's it. The timing *should* be at least close enough to run rough. I am out of ideas. The last things I can think to try is pulling the carb apart to check for clogged jets (the plugs aren't as wet as I would expect after trying unsuccessfully to start her for a couple hours) and setting the points. Anyone have any other ideas for me? Anyone in the Denver area wanna come by Sunday and help? There's free beer in it for you! :: grin ::

Oh- one other thing... Are the point settings the same for a 79 (Series 9) as they are for the earlier models? My manual has next to NO information for the 79- goes straight from info about the series 6 or 7 to the series 11-12.

Thanks!
Merlyn

I'd dump a little dribble of fuel (like a shot glass full or less) down the carb throat and see what it does. if it is fuel delivery it should fire over. You should also gap the points correctly wiith a feeler gauge, too much gap could cause it to missfire. It might also pay to adjust the valves, or run a compression check to make sure they are actually closing and opening enough.

The distributor should be set so the vac advance is pointing just about straight back. Your symptoms sound a lot like the 80 I got not running. It turned out that the cam timing was 180 degrees off. It would pop a little, and backfire out the carb (with flames !) if I poured fuel down it. So, you could try swapping plug wires on the cap. Swap 1 and 4, and 2 and 3. A lot of the timing instructions for the cam actually go off #4 being at TDC, so it is easy to get things backwards when you pull the head/cam. I always wire the cam gear to the chain when pulling the head, so the cam timing cannot change. If I had to bet, I'd wager on the timing being 180 out, so swapping plug wires is a quick check to eliminate that as a problem.

There is an old post of mine that has all the instructions for verifying the cam timing, but I'm running low on time right now. Search for it, or I'll try to get on here later and find it for you. Hope this all helps :)

I tried the gas down the carb- No joy... but I may have put in too much.

As for the timing... I am reasonably sure I'm not 180 out at this point. Why?
I actually pulled the #1 plug and the valve cover, got the #1 piston as close to TDC as I could and checked the cam to make sure it was on the compression stroke (both valves closed) When I got it to that point, I checked the position of the dist rotor (right at the #1 plug tower) and the timing mark (12 degrees BTDC). Re-seated the dist cap and put the plug wires on in the proper order. Talk about the long way round to check the timing :: sigh ::

Definitely going to set the points (anyone know the proper gap for a '79?) I'll pull the carb down and clean it, check the jets- although I am fairly sure that's not it.

If I have anything left out of the paycheck tomorrow (if I had any money, I'd have bought a RUNNING truck) I'll pick up some plugs and wires before I get back to working on it.

There are a lot of vacuum connections unhooked now, since I've put on the new carb... but I can't see a vacuum leak not letting it run at all. Just to be on the safe side, I'll block all that crap off before I try her again.

Lemme see.... I am going to try to borrow a compression tester this weekend and check the compression on all 4 cylinders. We'll see where that tells me, if anything.

If it isn't running and I still don't know why by Wednesday- It's for sale :: grin ::

You mentioned that the Oil was Incredibly nasty ummm...... As I understand it there it a relay that is supposed too keep the truck from running if the Oil Pump is bad...Idea being to shut her down before there is damage to the engine.

Whether or not that is a part of this current problem or not; for future reference; if you ever have your Oil pump fail in a 79 or 80 Stock 4x4 you will have to pull the motor to be able to remove the oil pan just to get to the Oil pump. So if the relay does it's job (IF) that will be a good thing but the extent of replacing the Oil pump will be the bad news.

However, I believe my .02 in addition to that would be like you said ..to verify that all your vacuum ports are either hooked or properly plugged. And checking everything else these guys have mentioned.

It may be that rely I'm talking about it may not be, just thought good luck :)

Point gap is .018. Once the plugs have been flooded with gas they will not fire even when they look ok. Been there done that too many times. Don't waste your time, simply put in a new set, they are cheap.

I was gonna say check your fuel pump and the fuel filter back by the tank, but you already tried dumping gas into the carb and it still didn't fire up. I would test the coil with a multimeter to make sure it's giving a good enough spark and then maybe try hot-wiring it to see if your ignition switch is faulty.

The only thing else I can think of is to check your fuseable links at the battery or clean all of your contacts and connections at the fusebox real well.

Good luck!
