they never came from the factory with them, but the step side was a dealer option at least in Oregon... the bed found on most step side luv was commissioned by Chevy threw George Barris's nephew who designed it and was also distributed threw California step side.. As for finding one you just have to keep looking. I have bought three threw the wrecking yards around here and have passed on two of them so they do pop up at the yards from time to time... other wise look on craigslist.com

What Cat said...lol

Ditto here in Washington...although they weren't as popular here on 4X4's...most likely due to the fiberglass rear fenders.

Some guys with 4X4 mini-trucks here also used to take standard sized beds from older trucks and cut them down and weld them back together to fit.

Some guys even put add-on after-market extended rear fenders on a standard short bed or long bed to make their trucks a mini dually.

(I used to live next door to a guy that had a Toyota extended cab long bed dually that he custom built for his body shop's company truck. I always thought it was a pretty odd looking thing...but he loved it.)

Luv step side beds are harder than the dickens to find...and to find one completely intact and in perfect shape is pretty rare. You just have to keep lookin' untill you find one...and you probably better be prepared to pay a few $$ for it when you do.

The price usually ranges from $100 - $300 around here...depending on it's condition and who is selling it.

I saw a stepside bed or fenders on the seattle craigs list recently. It might still be there if you do a search

With the new body shape in 81 the chassis was changed so the tank was on the RHS of the truck to allow a clear run for the exhaust down the LHS.

The early motor in the Luv (pre 75) had the exhaust come out the RHS of the motor so it was clear for the exhaust with having the tank on the LHS. With the newer type motor in the later luvs they just crossed the exhaust over under the chassis and left the tank where it was.

Cheers, Bob.

I ACTUALLY HAVE THE ORIGINAL PAPERS THAT CAME FROM CALIFORNIA STEP-SIDE, WHEN MY TRUCK WAS PURCHASED NEW. IT SHOWS THAT THE TRUCK WAS ORDERED WITHOUT A BED AND SHIPPED THRU CUSTOMS WITHOUT EMISSION EQUIPMENT. STILL HAVE THE TRUCK AND WANT TO PUT IT BACK TOGETHER SO BAD. ITS BEEN APART IN BOXES AND IN SHEDS SINCE 1991. ITS A '78 2WD STEPSIDE

all come into the states without the bed attached for custom reasons that’s why so many step side are out there ... allot of dealers put them on instead of the normal bed.... my ? is where are all the good beds that where never installed... but here in Oregon I would say 4 out of every 10 on the lot new was a step side back in the day when there where new, I would go and look on the weekends thinking of trading in my 74 for a new 79 step side

not sure what they way but they are lighter then a normal bed and two guys can take them off and on easily... also with the step side beds if you find one have them remove the fenders and put them in the bed when they ship it, this will do two things... protect the fenders and make it smaller and easier to ship... thats the way the came from california step side

even with the light fiberglass fenders, my step side is heavier than one man wants to handle often. But since the previous owners of my Luv WELDED the bed to the frame, I decided to fix it. And ended up with a hand tilt Luv bed. It's very heavy to tilt by yourself, and I think it has half ton chevy fenders on it.
