I took my 78 for a smog check today. It passed on emissions, it runs good and clean.
He would not pass the truck though, because he has a book that said it should have a charcoal canister. My book says that wasn't until 1980.
In fact, my 80 has a canister, and my 78 and 79 do not. I showed him how the vapor recovery works but that was not good enough for him.
So I will take him my manuals tomorrow and show him.

He's a good guy, he just wants to be sure.

Yup, rondog your right. No canister before 80. Stores the vapors in the crankcase, believe it of not. If I remember correctly the canisters were on the 80 Calif models only.

I always had a problem smogging my 78 in Colorado, they kept trying to fail me because of no catalytic converter and I kept having to make them read the fine print in the book "California models only!!!"

Sorry. I never updated this.

Yea. I showed him the differences in my illustration book and he was cool with it. Said it was a new one on him.
He said," you really know these trucks, don't you?" I said, " Yea, I have 3 of them."

Glad there isn't no smog or inspections in Ohio, always wanted to know if it is legal to run a fuel cell in Cali?
