When i put the 283 in my truck on the first build i used the ram horns that have the exhaust angled to the back then ran the exh, around the torsion bars to side pipes .I wish i still had them as they work real well on a luv project.

Is $75 a good price for a used B&M Mega Shifter? Do they break? What should I look for if I go take a look?

He's got some other 2nd gen Camaro stuff too, intake, dizzy...

It's a fair price as long as it's in good shape AND the cable is included and good. They are fairly expensive...

Someone else snagged the shifter, so I'll keep looking for a stock Luv AT shifter.

I'm looking at the '80-86 305/350 Chevy aluminum manifold. 14057053.

What is this bore design called? Comments appreciated. :)

It's called a sreadbore and you will be better off with a performer manifold as a lot of the 80-86 Alum. manifolds are cracked or are going to.
This causes a vac. leak that can melt a piston before you realize it.

One of the guys I work with has been a Chevy gearhead for many years, and when I told him about this project he got a chuckle out of the whole thing...'a free truck?'

He came into work this week and said, 'I got a tub of shivvy parts for you, I'll bring it in later this week. It's leftover stuff from the last engine I built. I was cleaning out the garage and was gonna' toss this stuff. Just throw out whatever you don't want...'

So I grabbed it out of his truck this morning after work and sort of ignored it, I figured an air filter, a couple of oil filters, stuff like that....

Holy smokes was I suprised when I opened this thing up. I was stunned at what he called 'trash'... I'm going to try to convince him to take some money for this stuff, but as it stands this is one more free acquisition for this project. Take a gander :)

Here's the inventory list:

-Mini starter
-New double roller timing set, w/2 chains
-Oil pump
-Rocker arms, pushrods
-Fan
-Oil breathers (still in blister pak)
-Air filter (brand new Summit, still in box)
-Motor mounts (still in blister pak)
-Chrome timing chain cover
-Lots of new gaskets
-New damper and timing pointer
-set of 3 mini-gauges (still in blister pak)
-2 carb adapters (one still in blister pak)
-New mechanical fuel pump
-2 filler necks
-New spark plug wires
-New dizzy cap
-New PCV valve
-Box of new plugs
-A new parts tub *grin*

Wow! I figure there is a couple hundred dollars worth of stuff here, easy...

Life is good 8)

Cool deal! Now do yourself a favor and lose the chrome timing cover. Those things are notorious for leaking...

Thanks guys :D

I have a few technical sort of questions, mytmouz and tj you guys are awesome on this V8 stuff...thanks for following the thread.

1. What is the point/purpose of the openings in the valve covers? Can I use a set of closed 'Chevrolet' script valve covers on a '74 350?

2. I'll skip the factory 80's aluminum manifold and just go with a cast iron unit. What carb would you guys recommend for a stockish engine? Can I run a Motorcraft 2150 2bbl on a 350? Would it be stupid to use a performer intake with a 2bbl adapter? Aside from a Q-Jet what are good, inexpensive choices for a 4bbl?

3. Can someone explain torque converter 'stall speed'? I think I get it, but I'm curious what it means in real life, seat of the pants sort of thing. The objective with this truck is to build a reliable daily driver with some semblance of fuel economy.

4. Is the stock Luv electric pump a better option than a 350 mechanical pump?

The engine has to breath or vent that is what the holes are for.

1 is for the PCV and the other to a breather tube going to the air filter and one to put oil in.

The quick way is to put push/twist in breathers, one in each cover.

Stock motor stock converter

The two barrel is ok but you will get better fuel economy with a small(500) four barrel as long as you drive light footed. The two barrel carb is a compromise between power and economy.

Also if your putting this motor in your LUV do your self a favor and use an alum. manifold to save your self 25 lbs of weight and for you aplication a performer would be neer perfect.

I have no idea what all is here, this is one of those friend-of-a-friend things where the guy's son sent me some pics off his phone...

The kid said $100 for all of this stuff, but the dad (who it belongs to) was a bit quiet when the price came up. Anyway, I figure there is a core here that would work for me, so I'd appreciate it if you guys could tell me what you can make out here. I think I see a Holley 4160 and either an AFB or a Q-jet, but I just don't know. The intake in the one pic is also for sale, it looks like a dual plane. This stuff is nearby, so I should probably just go take a look...

I know the pics are small, thanks for looking.

I like the 500 to 600 cfm holleys with the vacuum secondaries on near stockers, along with a good dual plane intake.

I see 2 holleys in the pics so 100.00 bucks would be a good deal then sort the rest and sell it and the holleys may be free then.

A little update -

-I have a stock wiring cab/engine harness and dash gauges coming, thanks to Aaron516

-I struck a deal with Sokoji to pick up the ram's horns he had on the truck

-I discovered I have all the parts I need to go to a one headlight setup

-I'm going to see the guy with the stack-o carbs next weekend

-I'm going to check in with Luvprojects again, he's selling all of his Luv parts for $125, and it's a lot of stuff. I need some stuff for the '78, so this would be a tag team purchase if I can figure out a way to transport the doors/hoods/tranny's etc.

:)

I'm looking at this cam: http://store.summitracing.com/partdetai ... toview=sku

Anyone running this? 1000-3500 RPM power band, I'm looking for low end torque and daily-driver-ability. I'll be pushing a stock TC in a TH350 with (I think) 3.00's in the 8" rear.

From what I've been reading, the weakest area in the 350 is the cam. Do I have to change the cam bearings if I swap cams? I'm clueless.

Thanks guys, I know nearly nothing about cams...

Got a box of parts from Aaron516 yesterday. This is officially the first parts purchase for the '75. Aaron was great to deal with, sent what I paid for, and kept in touch through PM's. Pulling the harness was probably a pain in the arse, but he did it without destroying it and gave me a fair price for the whole shootin' works. Thanks Aaron 8)

I don't have all the tags on in this photo, but you get the idea. I wiped it down and completely wrang it out with a multimeter. It's about perfect :D. I could not figure out one connector, turns out it was the FACTORY radio plug. No wonder, I've never actually seen one...hahaha...

Image

This is the complete order: Wiring harness, Gauges, Glove Box door w/hinges, and a Voltage Regulator.

Image

Here's the gauge panel, it's from a '80 4x4 and in really great shape.

This harness pretty much cinches my decision to go with a single headlight setup. The dash pod in the truck now has had wires directly soldered to the gauge pod posts. I'm not sure I'll be able to save it, but if I can, it will be up for grabs.

I also found a Mikado glove box door in the garage today, so if anyone is interested in the 4x4 door, let me know...

More parts, all the way from Kansas, courtesy of hotrodjd3.... :D

1. Fuse Panel (to go with my 'new' harness)
2. Speedo Cable
3. Pair of seatbelts w/receivers

Image

I know it's boring, but I get all silly when I get new stuff for the project
Hoping to pick up the exhaust manifolds next Sunday ...
