wanted to see if anyone has removed or modified the cross member at the back of the cab. i'm asking this question more to the v-8 guys with the bigger driveshafts, this is on a 76 swb and i just put in a 3 inch shaft and had to notch a little of this cross member.

Have you seen this? It's in the information section here on the site. You've already done your mods, but this gives some good info...

the cross memeber i'm talking about is the one father back just about 6 inches from the back of the cab, it is a thinner metal than the trans mount and i'm assuming it's just a lite brace for the frame. i will try to get some pic's to show which one i'm talking about. thanks for your help.

hotrod that is the correct crossmemeber and did you have to notch it for the drive shaft? i'm using a 3 inch shaft and had to remove about a 4x2 peice out of the top of it.

No, mine cleared I run a smaller tube size . When i had the pinion angle off and busted the first shaft it got kinked on that crossmember . I'll see if I can get a shot of it tonight . I think your set up is more "serious " than mine.

i'm running a 5 degree negative pinion angle on mine, i noticed when i put weight on the frame it cleared the cross member but the bed is off right now so that weight is not there to help. i'm just trying to make sure i have clearance so when it unloads the suspension it does not hit and damage anything like you described. my first shaft was a 2 3/4 inch and it cleared with no problems.

Well I got a picture of it for you . A friend of mine once told me that technical forums are like a refrigerator full of sandwiches , people come to them and grab what they need , I am just trying to do my part and put a sandwich back in , as i have done my share of taking during my build . Hope this helps and sorry for the rant .

Well, I feel sorta' stupid. This isn't about the trans, it's about the crossmember. Sorry to interject off-target info. :?

Good luck with your build CT

I put a 5 speed out of a Trooper in my Luv. That Cross member was cut just inside past the torsion bars. Then I had the removeable two square plates welded to the frame so you can take off the crossmember with some bolts. 8)

CT is your truck stock height? Thats the only way that I could see you needing to cut that section out. Did you buy the tranny and motor mounts as a kit or did you make them?
