I have some money to do some upgrades on my small block LUV. Right now it's an all stock 1980 350 w/ a Q-jet. Are aluminum heads worth the cost? Is there a big difference between AFR and Edelbrock heads? Has anybody used these? Thanks

Your choice of heads is going to depend on your intended use.

I have built a couple of street SB chevys one 350 one 383 that i used the alum. corvette head on and they work real well on a street setup but will lack the performance of other after market heads. But for street and marginal race use they have allot better throttle response, but on the 383 they were done at 5800rpm's and the 350 was good to 6200 after that they fell flat. It's down in the lower rpm's that they shine.

I run dart pro1 's on a 383 10:1 compression pump gas through the mufflers on street tires and have run a best of 7 flat in the 1/8.

no one has mentioned how much weight difference there is between cast and aluminum, i use dart pro 1 with work done to them and i'm happy. what i really like is the weight of the aluminum heads they are much lighter and easier to take on and off the motor.

As long as some fool doesn't put them on with 3m yellow glue. True story. I had this happen to me when I worked at a small town Pontiac dealer. The other technician thought I was a wuss. Took Both of us and a long cheater bar.

And i thought i was the only one who got stuck with one of thoughs.

I did a Ford 289 for a guy about 38 years ago that some bone head used gorilla snot (3-M weather strip glue) on the head gaskets, it took me about 6 hours with a lot of work and a 6 foot bar to get the heads off and cleaned up.

Who ever did the job didn't want the gaskets to leak and they still leaked cause as you can tell he also didn't know how to torque them down either.

SOME PEOPLE SHOULD NEVER TOUCH A TOOL :x

About the same time frame I guess. I was not sure if any one would know gorilla snot or not. There is now a gorilla glue but it is some good stuff too.

Gorilla snot is the best when I was doing the circle track thing a few years ago I got a hole in the oil pan we used Gorilla snot and some rags to make a patch. We ran a 50 lap main that night and I finished 3rd place.

oops hit the wrong button and posted before I was finished. Besides weight savings with the aluminum heads what other advantages are there? 2 guys that I know that are pretty good mechanics swear by them and say you can run more compression with them. I dont see what they are talking about is there some kind of reaction with the aluminum that helps prevent detonation or what?

It's not a reaction, but the aluminum transfers heat quicker making them less detonation prone.
