There definately are some differences between the two. I'm in the process of merging a '75 body with the running gear from an '82 diesel. At first I was going to just move the body and bed from the '75 over to the '82 but quickly found that the bed mounts differently. If I find the same with the cab, I might look at moving the running gear from the '82 into the '75 chassis but I was hoping to keep the disc brakes and upgrades that were made between '75 and '82.
Anyhow, not sure on the differential. I can go make some measurements if it would help you. Also, note that the '81 wheelbase is 2" longer. That might just be in the drive line but it also might translate into differential differences. I'll go look again.
