that it might answer a few of your questions. . .
If you are looking for an upgraded axle, but don't want to break the bank on your LUV, there is only one way to go !
A 1982-1994 S-10 2 wheel drive, (no sorry kids 4 wheel axles won't work.) Also, just incase you were curious, S-15 axles will work but they have to be a certain model, and it is better just to stay away from them.
And once you have found one of those, and if the gear ratios are not what you want, or you do not have a posi-unit, fret not, because since the S-10 differential is a GM 7.5" 10 bolt, they have been around for quite a few years and there are a variety of well priced parts available, from ranging gear ratios to lock up spools, to posi-units.
Once you have that settled, it is a straight bolt in extravaganza. The stock hardline brakes from the differential will bolt directly into the brake splitter from the frame of your stock LUV truck !
Once you have everything buttoned up and down nice and tight, then from there is the driveshaft. Pending on what transmission you are using, and how your motor is placed, there will always be some difference in lenghts of driveshafts, even from LUV to LUV. So as a piece of mind just buy a new one, new yokes and everything balanced all nice, built just for you, and it wouldn't cost a whole lot. But if you are going for the bargain route, and you are using a TH-200/TH-350/TH-400 you can find a Generation 3-4 camaro driveline and have it shortened, balanced, and new yokes front and rear. The labor for having the yokes replaced, shortened and balanced will cost anywhere from $90-$150 dollars, plus however much you find your junkyard driveline for, so with that in mind. . . just go have a new one fabbed up !
