Hey all,
What is the empty weight of a '79 LUV 2wd? I can't seem to find it in my manuals. Thanks!

I thought it was 3550? At least I think that is what my registration says.

That may be it's weight with passengers and "full" bed load or based on a category for a "modern" small pickup, not too many mini's left.

yeah, the reason that I ask is that I think the DC DMV ripped me off when I registered it. I didn't know the weight, they said that they could look it up. They came up with 3700 lbs which sounded like BS to me. My old title didn't have a weight on it. I didn't argue the point because I didn't have any proof with me, but 3600 pounds is the cut off between having to pay $72 and $114. I thought that there was no way it could weigh over 3600 unloaded and they must have looked up the wrong type truck when they came up with that number (or deliberately did it).

Check page 8 here http://www.luvtruck.com/pdf/79Dlr-Brochure.pdf may want to take a copy down to the DMV just for kicks.

I think there's a road/bridge wear n tear factor as to why they use the GVWR..... it is in fact all BS if ya ask me.

GVWR=The maximum rated capacity of a vehicle, including the weight of the base vehicle, all added equipment, driver and passengers, and all cargo loaded into or on the vehicle. Actual weight may be less than or greater than GVWR.

The GVW is loaded, empty its less than 2800 without a driver, can't remember off the top of my head. Since it's a half ton and the DMV said 3700, - 1000lbs (1/2 ton) would be in the neighborhood of 2700. :D

holy been-looking-for-that-thread batman!!

the videos on there make me wanna put a v8 in the luv.

anyways, on a more on topic note, i weighed my 84 pup (late model luv) at the local junk yard last year, and it weighed 2330 lbs with an almost empty tank of gas, spare tire, rear bumper, and heavy wheel and tire combo.

im sure now with no rear bumper, and my chromie wheels (that weight damn near nothin) im down to about 2200. theres still alot i could take out of the truck too. im still running a complete interior, a spare, inner fenders...

i could prolly get it down to about 2100 if i really wanted to.

i ran mine across the scales @ 2600 with me in it and i weigh 185,so that's about 2400 for the truck alone. that's with no bumpers front or back, no inner fender wells,5 gallon fuel cell full, one rci high back seat, aluminum headed small block,350 trans and stock rear end with 10.5 inch slick on wagon wheels and a fiberglass hood.

The factory shop manual for my '79 (Series 9) says the following:

"The curb weight is 1116 kg (2460 lbs.) The vehicle is rated at 1792 kg (3950 lbs.) GVW, with a maximum payload of 500 kg (1100 lbs.)"

The manual does not give seperate weights for 2X4s and 4X4s, so I'm assuming the above weights are for 2X4s. Note that these weights are different than those shown in the sales brochure. Wonder why?

Why don't you find a truck scale around and ask 'em to tell ya what yer weight is. You could do it at a garbage disposal facility too.
