It should be on a small metal plate in the rear part of the driver's door jamb and on a sticker on the door. With all the work done to your doors both of those may have been taken out, or they just don't stick out much because they are both on the rear side of the doors.

The other spot I've seen it is stamped on the sheet metal under the cowl plate. (The grill just in front of the windshield, where the wipers come up through) You take off the cowl and it should be stamped into the metal on the right hand (driver's) side near the fender.

I've seen the remains of it painted on the frame and I think the motor has it someplace around on the block too. It may be stamped into the frame somewhere, but I have never stumbled across it.

So I was wondering how many digits the vin number is. I found a 5 digit number on the firewall on the passenger side, but I am not sure if it is it.

Here's the rundown of the V.I.N.#s

C is the division- Chevrolet
L is Chassis Type- Light Utility
N is Engine Type
1 is the Gvw Range- Half ton
4 is the Body Type- 4 is Pickup and 3 is Chassis Cab
9 is the Vehicle Series- 9 is a 79, 8 is a 78 and so on
8 is the assembly plant- in this case and on my truck
(Which has a 8 here) it was assembled at the Fujisawa plant in Japan
200001 is a sequential number

That covers it pretty much. The full vin will be a 13 digit number. If there is no sign of the metal tag on the door pillar look at the back edge of the door for a sticker. It may still be there under some paint where you could scrape it off and find the vin. Failing that, take out the four screws holding the cowl on and the wiper arms to pull the cowl plate. The vin stamped on the driver's side in under there may be missing some of the first few digits, but it should have enough of it to figure out the rest. I just had my 77 apart fixing a leak last week and I recall that it was missing some of the first bits but I can't recall how many digits. The serial number portion was there though. Its hard to tell from your cardomain pics how much of that area has been chopped for the tilt front, but it looks like the area this should be in is still attached to the cab.

The frame on my 79 has the remnants of it painted on the passenger side facing out, just about behind the door. Of course if anyone has painted the frame it will be gone, or it may just have worn/rusted off so that isn't much of a help usually.

The only thing I recall seeing on the firewall was the paint code sticker, but I could be wrong. Any idea what year this truck is supposedly? I've got trucks 76-80 I could look at. Yours looks to me like a 77 with its 4 head lights and yellow rear turn signals, but that could have been parts changed between a truck or three.

well I looked under the cowl and everything seems perfectly smooth, there looks like there used to be a plate, there, though, so maybe that was it. :( Then I looked on the frame, but it's been painted a few times, so no telling there, either. I am going to pull it out of the garage tomorrow and check in the light, though, and maybe something will turn up. I think mine is a '75, that's what I've been told, anyways.

Thanks for all the help!

The marks under the cowl that I've seen are stamped right into sheet metal, not on a tag hooked to it. With all the custom body work that truck has it could be that most of the traces of it have been taken out. Seems like every place I think of where it could be ends up being right in the middle of some custom body work when I look at your pics. I'll go check my factory service manual as well, maybe it has a list of areas to look for it. I bet there is at least one more stamp on the body somewhere, they really started plastering vin codes all over rigs in the 70s.

Can you also look up the engine castings? I can't find where I can plug in the numbers to get any information on the engine. I know that you can do a lookup of the VIN at Americanclassics.com or something like that. I have to find my paperwork, but no engine lookup.
