I'm new to this site, although I been having my Luv for over a year now. I found this site looking for a cowl hood.

I got a '78 Luv Stepside with a four link, narrowed 12-bolt car axle, and a 383 flattop stroker that runs 11.40-50s. It is pro-street, I do drive it around some.

Now,

I want to put a BB in it. How do I support the extra weight and control the bottoming out? Could I replace my front shocks with coil overs and leave the torsion bars to help also? Where can I find headers to fit the big block?

I did a search before I posted. I seen a few big block swaps but nothing on how to beef the suspension. A few mustang II conversions and like but nothing that would help with stock suspension. I am sure someone has done it though. I really thing replacing my regular shocks with coil overs would help but don't know for sure.

Check out Scott Howards' truck in the project section. Lots of pictures and some info.

That is a lot of good info and pics. He's using a Mustang II front end though. Seems like what everyone is using. Replacing my shocks seems the way to go for me though.

I guess the best way to do it is to measure my shocks with the sb in the truck and at rest. Weigh the sb, then weigh the bb subtract the difference and select springs above that work load. I think I could loosen my torsion bars and adjust the load nut on the shocks to dial it all in. Thanks Ray

I think Scott's deal was that the torsion bars were in the way of the motor. Coil overs should take care of that.

The biggest reason I did away with the torsion bars was to make room for headers, and to get bigger brakes. A added bonus was 5 lug.
I have seen pictures of a few with the stock front end but I also wanted a removable crossmember so I cut it all out and started back with the Mustang ll front end .
Keep in mind that moving the engine transfers weight to the rear. My truck drove great and had less weight on the front end than the stock 4 cly. Mustang.
Good Luck

yea, i would go with a good set of coilovers, just get some with a high spring rate and you should be good. im not sure for luvs but i know H&R makes some good auto cross coilovers for vw's. or maybe go with this company named "Ground Control", they make some really good coilovers. im not sure if they make them for luvs thou :?
