Get a used one from your local wrecking yard. Aftermarket or used levers will need to be fabricated in to place. You'll be able to eliminate the stock pull lever, cable and compound levers back to the axle cable. When you locate the lever in between the seats, make sure that you dont cut in to the fuel tank vent line. You dont want to create a fire hazzard and keep the vapor from entering the cab(I learned this the hard way). You can reroute the axle cable to the new lever. A bracket of some kind will need to be made for the cable end. The bed bracing underneath isn't strong enough to handle the pull of the cable.
I needed to build a e- brake assy to pass state inspection with my Buick V-6 setup. Mine works great once a year. That's the only time i need it.
Keep in mind of driveshaft clearance when you locate the lever.

Got one in my 76 but I made it when I was working at a machine shop. Took the lever out of a Jetta and made the housing at the shop.

do you think if i pounded some thicker sheet metal into the base shape inside and underneath and welded it in, it could support the weight?

The bed bracing cant hold the outer cable housing solid enough. The lever can be fabricated to the cab floor easily, getting the flex out of the cable action is the problem. I fabricated a monster of a bracket that bolts to the bottom side of the bed. It was the fast way to eliminate the problem but in hindsite, i could have made a smaller bracket assembly that bolted to the rear of the cab.
