 Post subject: Suspension Lift
PostPosted: Wed Feb 02, 2005 2:11 am
Hi guys!

Okay I have a 78' luv 4x4 with a 2" body lift. I'm looking at tring to put on a suspension lift. I would like a minimum of 3" but if I could go higher at a reasonable price that would be great!

I would even take sugestions on changing out the IFS in the front, or doing a Spring over the axle in the rear.

Any sugestions, links, or personal knowledge would greatly appreciatied!

No one makes a kit for suspension lift for the LUV. You can do some yourself though with relative ease. You can get about 3 inches in the front by cranking the torsion bars, and the rear can be lifted with longer shackles or adding/changing springs. Shackles only gain half the length you add to them, and can magnify axle twist problems. I had a 79 with 3 inches all by rearched springs and it rode very nice. In fact, it was smoother than my stock 2WD LUV. Doing spring over in the rear will get about 4 inches, which is hard to match in the front with the IFS. Whatever you do in the front with the IFS, plan to get it to the alignment shop right after as it will change things pretty drastically if you add more than a smidge of lift.

Ideally, you would do spring over in the rear, and solid axle swap in the front. Toyota axles front and rear would work, or you could find something for a front that has the diff to the right. D44 from a Jeep wagoneer is what a lot of the later Isuzu guys (troopers, etc) look for, so I bet that would match up pretty close for a LUV as well. Just make sure your front and rear gears match though. ;)

Independent4x (independent4x.com) sells a full mounting kit for mounting a D44 out of a Grand Wagoneer onto first gen Troopers, pups, Rodeos, and Amigos. the kit comes with every thing except the axle itself, and the steering linkage. the kit runs about $650, so it's a bit pricey, but takes a lot of the guess work out of a solid axle swap. They also sell a spring over conversion kit for the above mentioned Isuzu's. I have found their site to be a pretty good source of info for suspension stuff. well i hape that helps ya out a least a little.
