i now have acess to a good mig welder and was considering extending my cab about 8". i would like to recline my seats back a little and get my knees out of my chest

Would i have to weld the body and bed together? or would i have to set my bed back a little and cut the back of the cab off and extend it w/sheet metal? what gauge metal? and how would i reinforce it so it's not flimsy?

If i were to tackle such a task, I'd try to extend the cab at the doors. This would mean the floor section would need to be worked also. And the window glass would need to be custom made to the new doors. Splicing a forward cab section to an aft cab section would most likely be the best way to go about it. Maybe the same for the doors too. A longer cab with longer doors might give the truck a chopped top illusion. All of this extra work would make it easier to get in and out of the truck along with the extra leg room. But i would only attempt this with a long bed truck. A shortened long bed just might look as cool as a standard bed once it was completed.

That is a way I had not thought of to go about extending the cab. Draw a line down about the center of the side window and just cut/fill from there. It would take a lot more mechanical reworking for handles and window cranks, but it would mean less of a seam to weld. My pipedream idea was always to just slide the back of the cab (along with the louvers/slots) back and stick a window in there. I had just never thought about where else you might make the cut. There is always someone out there that has another way of doing it. :)

If you really want tot do this, stay out of the door opening. Extend the cab from behind the door jamb. If you can find another cab, that would be the easiest. Cut it from behind the door opening and splice it onto the back of your cab. This might be the only thing that stupid pinch weld on the back of the cab is good for. It will give you A nice overlap to weld to.

ok.... i have the entire rear panel +2" of the sides+floor from a 75 to work with. there's a steel yard 2 miles from my house (odd place for it but it's just right there) so old mr. reinheart can get me any kind of material

i figure if i cut that to fit the bed with a 1/2 inch fold along the edges,i could weld it in and then cut the rear of the existing cab out and fill in the gaps.

it seems that if i rolled or wrecked this thing that the cab would just crumble,so i'm tryiing to firure out how to re inforce the design without pulling all the existing support rails completly out and replacing them with longer ones. could i use a sheet metal brake and fold channels to weld to the existing ones, but i don't think that would be strong enough.

i have to consider weight when i do this too so i can't just use square tubing
