Sorry i haven't kept you guys in the loop more, my job has had me traveling out of state quite a bit and doesn't look like its going to let up.

In any case I get about 1 day every other weekend to work on my truck now so things have slowed down but I am still making headway. I just took some pics yesterday to show you the progress. The suspension is done, now I have to button up the valve wiring and air lines and fuel lines to the frame and I still have a huge body work project to do, as you can see. So this is FAR from complete or even road worthy yet, just a status of the project.

heres the pics:

Nope, if you notice the other wheel is leaning in too >> /--\. Thats what happens to the camber of the wheels when you go that low. If he was to lift the truck all the way up with the bags the tires would probably be leaning the other way like this \--/

I'm still trying to imagine how the upper two links of that four link move. It looks the like axis of swing at both ends is about 30 degrees from being parallel. I suppose one end doesn't swing as much as the other. Maybe I could wrap my brain around it with a pic of it lifted. I always see things more clearly on a lifted LUV. ;)

The way I'm seeing it move in my head has those upper links trying to twist as they swing.

That looks Pretty bitchin' bro, I think I might try that since I am in the middle of the "Full Body Off" restoration process right now. Are them Bags very expensive? just though I would post on this Ride.......Buzz

Sorry I haven't replied any sooner, my wife just gave birth to our daughter...
I'm a dad, that still freaks me out a bit...

anyway,

800xl, you're right, as the frame lifts the upper two links rotate but also twist. a bit. I have one end of ea upper threaded and the jam nut loose tot he uppers dont bind as they move through the range. Hope that helps... I triangulated the uppers cause I didn't want to run panhard or watts linkage. The triangulation keeps the axle from moving side to side.

The bads are firestones and are not very expensive at all, just head to suicidedoors.com and Jason will hopok you up. I think I paid 69.00 a piece about a year ago for the bags. I have about 900 in the suspension as it sits right now.

Congratz on the new daughter. :D

Thanks for the info, makes it easier to imagine it all working knowing one end does indeed twist. I wonder how hard it would be to do the same on the back end only with an eye towards lift instead of low. I can see doing a similar setup on a 4x4 truck. Gain some inches, load leveling ability, flex yourself out of a rut, all sorts of possibilities there. It might take a little more math to get the angles to hold up all the way through the long suspension travel and side/side flex you'd want off road. Even though I'm not really into layin frame, that setup of yours really gets me thinking.

I recall seeing a write up someone did of a traction bar on a 4x4 where they used Heim joints to allow movement both directions at the same time. That might be an alternative to the solid- mount-left-loose method, though I can't think of an advantage over what you have. Maybe if the jam nut bound up or tightend on its own enough to bind you might have trouble, but it probably isn't turning all that much. I doubt you'll be letting it sit in one place long enough for the threads to get rusted togther or anything.

800xl,
to get serious lift I thin most of the serious full size guys use 4 links, a bit diffrent than mine but the same idea. And like you said, for maximum rock crawling bility I would deffinatly run Heim joints on the links and then run a pan hard or watts link to keep the rear end from moving sideways. You'd get hellacious flex.

Wicked Mayhem,
yes the 81-82 body style has the torsion bar setup just like the first gen Luv's had. I had some front end pictures on street source but I took them down. to put these up. Pretty much you just remove the torsion bar system all together. Take the shock tower and cut most of it off, reinforce it to hold a upper bag mount that is gusseted, notch the front frame so the LCA can kind of pass up into the frame. drill a hole inthe lca to accept the air bag and your in bussiness. Abut in all actuality there is a bit of fabrication work to get it all done. Just make sure you have a good mig welder and know how to use it along with a cutoff wheel to make your cuts.
