Anybody else have trouble getting the torsion bars out of the lower control arms? I tried beating them out with a sledge hammer and even tried heating the control arm to try and remove it. Any suggestions befor I cut the arm in halves?

i've tried to get mine out before with no luck. i think they would have to be twisted the opposite way they they normally torque. i think they kinda wedge themselves in there after driving for a while. i would stay away from heat, or just be sure to keep the heat off the torsion bars.

Yeah I definately don't want to heat the torsion bar. My 4x4 would ride a bit low with broken torsion bars. I don't care if I ruin the control arm though.

i didnt really have much of a problem taking mine out, have you taken out the shocker? and undone the other end of the torsion bars? you could try and soak it in wd-40 and attack it with the sledge again
theres a bolt like rod that sticks into the torsion bar and goes through the lower control arm, you could try and remove the bolt with the control arm then try and remove that once its out of the car

The torsion bar and lower arm are out of the vehicle. I had the thing clamped in a bench vise and beat the hell out of it with a 5 pound sledge hammer. All that did was mushroom over the end of the 3/4 inch steel rod I was hitting with the hammer. :(

All I had to do was remove the lca and torsion bar as a whole unit and then I dropped it on the garage floor. It shook it loose enough that I was able to wiggle the torsions out of the lca.

Either you got real lucky or they don't put any salt on the roads in Portland.

Think a 20 pound sledge hammer would do it? I'm not sure the bench or the vise will be able to take that kind of punishment though.

actually, your right, they dont salt the roads out here, we use pea gravel and lava rock from the volcanos in the area. sorry didn't think about the corrosion factor.

have you tried soaking the connection with wd40 or pb blaster yet?

OK, I got the torsion bars out of the control arms tonight. After a lot of sweat from beating the crap out of them, I broke down and sliced through the lower control arm with a cut off wheel and hammered a couple of screwdrivers in the slot that I cut in order to spread it open a bit. Then I had to beat it with a 20 pound sledge hammer to get it loose. the second one came out just by beating with the 20 pound sledge. :) The truck rides so much better with the 2wd torsion bars on it and flexes better on uneven terrain too. 8)
