Post subject: How to customize my LUV
PostPosted: Sun May 23, 2004 8:32 pm
Here are the things I know I'd like to do after I get a different engine to power it:
Bucket seats
Neon in the cab
top for my bed
Custom instrument panel
short shifting stick

So, is there anything else that I could do, to make it look different from anything you've seen? BTW this has to be paid on a 16 year olds' salary, which ain't much, trust me

Well out of your short little list of things you want to do, I think the dash and shifter will be your big expenses. Good Luck :!:

is there even better shifters made for our trannies? never heard that before. can it get swapped out for a shorter shifter like from a impulse or something ?

thats a good question most kids now adays just chop the shifter length down and call it a short shifter but in reality its not. its just cut down but the throw on the shift stays the same.

I've been wanting a custom instrument cluster! I was thinking of making one myself. I have the CAD software, and a buddy with a water-jet to cut it out of aluminum. If you know where to get one over-the- counter... let me know!

The chopped shifter is considered a short shifter, but not a short throw shifter..... I did see somewhere that someone had a short throw shifter for a luv, but I dont remember where I saw it........ As for the dash, you can either do what the others have and get one machined, or you can just take out the complete dash and build your own out of sheet metal (steel, alum, copper, whatever you want) I have done that before, the hardest part is getting the curve for the window right so it doesnt look like crap.....

Ok, first thaks!!! 8)
Well when I had mine done, I knew a kid (19 at the time) I met at a few truck shows, he had just bought his dad's metal machines. So he was sort of a friend, he also machined my crank pulley (single groove) as the metal multi-groove looked like crap and no one makes those either!! Well he is pretty big time now, he makes parts kind of Jessie James caliber and concentrates mostly on harleys now. Here is his website
http://www.billet4u.com/ I know I cant afford him anymore and havent seen he since around 92 when he built a billet carrier bearing spacer for my Dually. My advice would be to go to bigger car shows and ask around for machine shops. Pretty much how I found all of my contacts.
The dash, well I got pretty lucky there, I have a brother that is a parts man for a Chevy dealership in Wyo and I got one from him just before they sold out. He let me know they were being discontinued and I better act fast!!!! Man I wish I would have bought them all, this was back around 92 also. :x
The interior, well there is a place around here called "Sewfine" (found through cars shows also) and they specilize in VW's bugs and some mini-trucks. The seats are from them called "Sportz seats" and they are a universal seat that they cover with what ever fabric you want and then they have mounting brackets for each individual vehicle. Couldn't believe they had them for a LUV!! I got the carpet from them and cut and installed it myself, was pretty easy just have to make sure you glue it pretty well. Once again this was in the early 90's. LMK if you have any other questions. Thanks Todd

if u want a short shift pull your shifter out and lengthen the bottom half and make a spacer the same height as u added to your shifter and that should work.
