im puttin my bed back on my 1980 4x4, but first i am going to sand it down, and giver her a shot of paint. when i was looking at it today, i noticed that it is covered in a body filler type of material over the whole thing. my question is should i sand it all off, or jsut sand the paint off, then make it smooth.

i just sand it till it is smooth.if you take off all the filler you'll probably find 30 small dents.
they probably had alot of dents in the bed from stuff rolling around in the bed.
i have to do the same with mine since i have 80 small dents in a straight line down the side of mine.

IF ANYBODY KNOWS OF A GOOD FILLER LET ME KNOW ASAP..

Or it could be an old painters trick I ve heard about. Some of the old timer paint and body guys I worked with had told me that in the 70s some guys would lay a skim coat of filler over the entire vehicle because they thought it helped the crappy enamel paint they used back then shine better. Ive seen a hand full of older cars with a ton of filler all over them. Makes me beleive it.

bcg, if you are just looking for a filler, use bondo, it works real good. but if you are worried that it may get moisture in it and bubble the paint, then i would go with duraglass. it is green, and it is a fiberglass bodyfiller. 804x4, if you are going to make the whole bed smoothe, use a file board, i wouldnt reccomend a air fileboard cause they take off a lot of filler real fast.
