My plan is to swap a ford 8.8 rear out of a 4x4 ranger in my truck. I bought two rears cause I was under the impression that Iv got to shorten the long side tube 3" then use another short side axle. I notice the yoke is offset also. I dont want to go cuttin this thing up when I'm not 100% sure what the deal is. I would just like to hear from someone who knows what theyre doin and may have done this swap.

I would like to use factory leafs an shock mounts but if all else fails Im gonna go with ladder bar coil over.

I am doing this with the explorer 8.8 and the 2 short axles. Not sure on the Ranger width, but it will be around an inch per side wider using the explorer rear...

If I had to guess its damn close to being the same width. Im okay with it bein a hair bit wider cause I got a 4.5" backspace wheel with a 275/60/15 DR to stuff in there. Is the yoke on ur 8.8 offset? I didnt want to cut the 3" off the long side then not have my yoke centered up with the trans yoke. I havnt put it under the truck yet to eye anything up so I guess I had better do that.

Haven't done mine yet, just got all the parts for it. There are a LOT of these on an S10 site i am on, and I have seen them run with no issue due to pinion offset. Why I am going that route is I have seen it done already...

Yeah Iv looked up alot of the 8.8 swaps in the s10s an havnt heard anyone say anything about the offset pinion so I guess It's hack 3" off the long side, slide in another short side axle, put new spring perches on an its done.

brother pointed me to this. lot of information about 8.8's
http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/Axles.html

was thinking about doing the disc brake, 4.10 lsd out of a 95+. but they are very wide would need to cut the tubes down and have Dutchmen axleshafts made,
the ranger 8.8 is 1.5" narrower than a 90-94 explorer and the 95 exploder axle is 3" wider than the rangers
im looking for the R7 code ranger rear its 4.10 and L/S

All the explorers are 31 spline, while the rangers are a mix of 28 and 31...

How much hp will that rear end hold up to?

Just an update on the 8.8 here, I updated it in my build thread already. I put the short axle in the rear (modded the housing) and put it in. The axle is wider than an s10, which is wider than the LUV. The truck I am building in a step side, and I can only run a max 8 wide inch wheel without modding something. (There were like 3 different beds, I believe one of the others has wider fenders). I could not find a wheel with enough back spacing to work. Ended up going with a 9 inch.

As far as hp goes, I dunno. It is pretty much a 12 bolt clone to me, and I put some serious power (to me) through those with my chevelles...

Do you have the specs on how much the 9" has to be shortened?

Early S10 rear ends are practically a bolt in. The only thing I had to do is heat up and hammer the sides of the spring perches, where the u bolts go through. Then I used the LUV brake line and breather. Don't know about newer model S10's though.

The short axle swapped 8.8 is wider than the s10 rear. I got the truck with the s10 rear already installed. The wheels I got rubbed the frame rail with the s10 and hit the stepside fenders with the 8.8...
