Hello from Alabama. I'm new to the Luvtruck forums, or fairly new. I traded up for an 80 4x4 base model that I have been wanting. Fixed a few things here and there and am wondering what this is. I know that it has lines that are attached to the gas tank, but I'm not sure of its purpose. The container like thing is in the front driver side corner of the bed. If yall will, please let me know. Thanks!

that is the evaporator/charcoal canister for the fuel system I would leave it alone its connected to that line coming from the canister on your firewall along with the tank vent.
its not really worth the effort to remove it for the tiny bit of space you gain. you would need a vented gas cap and a place for those fumes from the front to go after you removed it. I took mine out but I had the cab and bed off so it was easy that way to remove the lines and everything from it and get a vented cap,

Reason I asked is because the cover is pretty much rusted away and I plan to eventually fix the outside of the bed where it is rusted behind it. Could I just run the lines to where nothing could get in them? Like with a filter on the end or something?

You can but you will smell fuel. Like the first post said there is no down side to keeping as is.
