Battery location on V8 Luv. I have checked some drag race rules. It seems that most require battery's that have been moved from stock locations require a cut off switch on the rear of the auto. My V8 has the battery in the bed in a battery box. It is not in the engine compartment. It was like that when I bought it. All I want to do is race a street class or bracket race in the no electronics class. Not going to make a race truck.

You will need to have the cutoff switch...

:signiagree On the Vega, my buddy ran a rod up to the "passenger" area so he can also turn the power on/off from inside......in case he forgets to turn it on before he gets in.

But only if the battery is moved.

BATTERY: All wet-cell batteries must not be relocated into the driver or
passenger compartments and must be securely mounted. A maximum of two (2)
automobile batteries are permitted of 150 Ibs. combined maximum weight.
Plastic battery hold down straps are not permitted. All relocated batteries
must be secured with a minimum of 2 3/8 diameter bolts or rods. When
relocated to the rear of vehicle, the passenger compartment must be
protected by a “firewall” consisting of a minimum of .024 steel or .032
aluminum. The switch must be connected to the positive side of the
electrical system and when de-activated shut off all electrical functions
in the vehicle

I can not believe that most people are going to want a cutoff switch sticking out of the rear of car/truck they drive.
I have seen a stock late model Camaro street car, license plate and all that stuff, race in Bracket class races almost every weekend. This guy drives it there, races, and drives it home. The battery is under the hood in the engine compartment.

So I must run six feet or more of battery cable(or welding cable) from the battery to the tailgate to a switch drilled through the tailgate and back to the battery.

So I guess I am asking does any V8 Luv's keep their battery under the hood? If that can be done, it would seem that is a moot point.. I do not read this as it must be in the stock locational. Just under the hood. I do not want to seem to be "nit picking"
As they say "inquiring minds want to know"

I guess it makes me mad that I should have to cut up my truck, just to run it down the track.. Makes me want to cut a hole in my inner fender and weld a small bucket there and mount there, the hell with everything else :smt019

I'll just take it to Oklahoma and street race!!!!!! I bought it there.
Or just take my old green 95 Chev 3/4 ton truck and race it. I would pull it up there with it anyway.

Sighing off... beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep

Mine is also under the hood in the stock tray but it has an stronger strap holding it in place than the stock bracket.

My stock tray was cut out for some reason. I could try to put one back there.

Most racing associations will require a master shut off switch, some want them accessible by the driver and outside and some just require the outside. Being able to cut the power off is a fire prevention rule. If you have an electric fuel pump they will also require it to have an oil pressure cut off switch.
Better safe than sorry.

I always put mine in the back. Thats a bunch of weight off of the front of the truck. You could even build a battery box under the floor and hide it.

I removed my battery tray from the front and installed it in the bed. If I was to do it again since my truck is a street truck I would leave it in the front. It does make my engine compartment a lot cleaner looking but it was a lot of work for not much benefit. I cleaned up the old tray area and smoothed it out because I painted my truck with a 3 stage paint job so matching it down the road would be a PIA.

Old Rob

The stock luv has a electric fuel pump.
The wiring diagrams show it. My stock step side has one. My V8 have one too.
All stock EFI systems have one.

I understand race cars, mine race only cars always had them. My stock Vega had one with a oil pressure sensor for a cut off. Roll over and it shuts off. I do not remember about our Super Stock car of the late 60's early 70's. I do not think it did. Every thing was in the stock position.

Actually the 72 - 75 LUV's had mechanical. When they switched to the Opel engine 76 - 82 they added the electic pump. All factory cars that have an electric fuel pump have some sort of shut off if the engine should die. Most used the op switch style. DOT requirements and good way to avoid pinto lawsuits.
Additionally american built cars have some type of collision switch, which will kill the fuel pump in case of an accident. They are ususally in the trunk and have a reset button. I've seen people take them out and took a while to figure out what they did when the car wouldn't start.

If you're not running a spare, you can put the battery under the rear of the bed floor. You can access itt from below or make a door in the bed floor. A good place to put the master bat cutoff switch is nex to the license plate holder. It's accessible yet not so obvious. Problem with dual purpose cars with master bat switch being visible is some anal orfice will turn it off in a parking lot thinking their being funny.

You're right on with the welding cable, especially running that distance. I make sure to put a red tape barber poll stripe on the positive, just to safe.

My Blue 78' had the battary in the stock location . My current truck has it in the bed and the white 79' i made a basket similar to the mount you posted and mounted it under the bed . Both of the rear mounts had cutoff switches . You can hide the cut off switch and just install a small push linkage .

Old Rob.
Series 4 (1975) Wiring Diagram shows wiring for a electric fuel pump.
Series 5 (1976) Wiring Diagram shows wiring for a electric fuel pump.
Series 3 (1974) Does not have wiring for a electric fuel pump

These are the Wiring Diagrams Poster off of the front page.

My stock 75 Luv truck Step Side has a electric pump. My v8 75 Luv has one but I can not trust it to be stock.

I could use a toggle switch and hook it up to a Ford Starter Relay. Bypass it when I am not racing so some fool does not mess with the switch to get his jollies. I do not read into it that a actual switch has to be in the back and hard wired to the battery cable.

Thats an interesting idea. Would be interesting what techs would say. Usually they want switch accessable from outside the vehicle. I would recommend using a RV battery type solenoid, as they are designed to handle the amperage beisdng switched on fol a length of time. Whereas the ford solenoid is designed for intermittant loads.

Good point Old Rob... I did not "explain" my self very good. The toggle switch would be at the back like panel below tailgate as I don't run a rear bumper. The Ford starter solenoid was more for example. I could not think of a better way to say it. knuckle head that I am and being tired does not help...I would have to get a relay that would handle more amps on a full tome load... Most likely from a large truck system or maybe from stereo setup. Many moons ago I used to do car audio, security systems, and such stuff. Worked on big trucks, but I don't remember much of either of that stuff anymore. 20 + years a go..Just enough to get in trouble lol

How many amps do you think I would need it to handle? RV stuff was a good idea... Thanks
