ok so i have exhaust gas leaking in to the coolant so that means i got to pull the head to replace the gasket...

while i got the head off i might as well start pulling off all the emissions crap

so in pulling the head any suprises i should be worried about beyond the regular head gasket swap?

before reading on I DON'T HAVE TO DO EMISSIONS!!!! its older then 25 years... and the trucks registered in an area where even if it wasn't to old i don't have to do it

im going to attempt to remove all the excessive weight in the engine bay (ie restrictive smog crap)
any one know the threads for the stuff i need to plug off?

the egr pipe on the fire wall side of the engine from the exhaust manifold to the intake manifold?

the 4 holes in the exhaust manifold

thread and length if you know it off hand

when i did mine i used a plate over the entire EGR port on the bottom in the intake manifold..
used a pipe plug (dont remember what size off hand) to plug the egr return line from the exhaust manifold... have seen it welded shut also.
the air injection holes above the exhaust manifold are a really weird thread and size they are 14mm x 1.25 threaded plug.. i made the plugs myself from 14mm bar and a thread die and cut slots into the tops to tighten with a screwdriver since i couldnt find any at the hardware store

was thinking about selling them in sets of 4 for ppl who wanted to do the swap removal
they have hell strong for quite a while now with some anti-sieze. i would recommend it over sticking spark plugs in the hole since they are a spark plug thread for some reason... i think the die and rod together were only around $10.. cant remember

Cut the air rail tubes, pull the tube pieces out of the threaded inserts, tap the inside where the tubes were, screw in bolts, put the inserts back into the head. Besides being cheap they fit the head better than any replacement and don't stick so far into the exhaust runner as to whistle.
To plug the EGR tube at either manifold cut & remove the tube, tap the inside of the threaded insert for a 1/4" pipe plug, replace the plugged insert. 15/16" wrench removes these inserts, they're easier to unscrew if you cut the tube close first.

that sounds fairly simple  ....

now on to changing the head gasket anything that might just pop up in the process? or is it just as straight forward as any other head gasket?

pretty straight forward. lock the timing tensioner so it doesnt flip itself open when your taking the chain off, no real surprises with these motors really simple design.

That's what I did years ago before I found this site. I have seen this solution mentioned several times and it works.

It's not an uncommon thread anyplace that metric is standard- like Japan & 90% of the rest of the world.
The hex head on a 9/16" bolt is too big, they won't tighten into the recess in the head.

changed my mind on the fix i have a set of old spark plugs autolite 65's that are 14 1.25 and standard bolt taps should solve the issue of capping them and ability to remove later

the hex on a 9/16 bolt isnt a problem that can be ground down or beveled to fit the recess but ... reason i changes to a spark plug is there is more meat to file down and there spark plugs so theyll for sure handle the heat and will remove as easily (using autolite 63 or 65 idk which) i have 4 old sets at the house already that dont need threaded....

ended up going with a set of autolite platinum *app605 (copper core are 605 and platinum are ap605) threaded in with out a problem no modifying yep pictures soon to follow...

out a 97 chevy cavalier z24 my motor ran to hot for them and burned off the electrode ended up having to go to iridium plugs (xp605) with it haha yeah i think thats what happens when your run the compression to high if i remember it was like 190-210psi per cylinder (may be wrong) any way it was over 11.5:1... never could keep tires on the front wheels of it... that poor ld9 handled 2 drivers under the age of 25 and at the end of me owning it 3# of boost... ended up selling it cause well the stock getrag transmissions couldn't handle the power of me driving it every day...

now on to another question i have a vacuum line that runs from the front of the intake manifold (passenger fender) to a hex shaped nipple (distributor side) of the manifold then the vacuum line runs to the back of manifold to what appears to be a (sence of feel) space ship shaped apparatus... what is it and can it be plugged off?

ok so mabye i was wrong about the plugs i used  all the ones above will work same plugs but apparently i threw a set of motorcraft agrf22p plugs in the autolite boxes (they are still double platinum)

so anyways...
all autolite, champion/ngk 14mm plugs are 1.25 thread any thing with a 5/8 nut will work and i used 3/4" plugs... there shorter then the tubes that had extended in to the manifold...

sorry for the size and quality of pictures....

and all the crap i removed... the heat shield was an accident of sorts... my intent was to remove it but i sheered the bolts off in the process... but kind of expected when removing a heat shield off any thin with more then 500 miles
