So today I came across a guy who has a Chevy LUV that is converted into motorhome.
Overcab sleeper. Dual tires in the rear. Looks like a professional conversion.

Has anyone ever seen a LUV converted like this?

I did a search on the forum and didn't find anything.

It sort of reminds me of a Toyota Dolphin.

I have seen many Yotas, but never a LUV. Pics?

Attached are the photos of the truck.

I've done a bunch of google searching as well and can't find any other examples other than this one.

Damn, that is a find for sure. It was an 81 or 82, could be a one of a kind. Looks like it was originally a 4x4 as it has the locking hubs, so that would now make it a 6x6? Where is this find at? Is it for sale?

Cool find. I would be pissed to get caught behind him on any kind of hill.

It's for sale for $1,700.
It's non-running, but turns over.

I wonder where they got the job done?

Also, any ideas about the dual shifters?

Here's a few more pics.

In '81 and '82 the diesel and the gasser were designed to deliver about the same performance in the factory configuration. Although the diesel was rated with lower HP than the gasser, HP doesn't tell the whole story. I'll bet the diesel would be more driveable than the 1.8 in this beast. Too bad there wasn't a turbodiesel back then.

Sure, that confirms that it's 4wd.

A little more info.
1 owner. It's owned by an older guy and someone else is helping him sell it. The contact person did not know where it got converted.
It has about 35,000 miles on it.
Was driving 4 months ago when it stopped working and had it towed.
It has compression.

It's located about 2 hours from where I live in Madison, WI.

The contact says that it is not actually 4 wheel drive, although that is what is used for the front end of the vehicle. Interesting.

also being 4WD, means its 4.11s or 4.55s
but with that load, thats not a issue at all, much better to be that way.
the rear most axial is likely a floater, no drive to it.

knowing that my 4,500LB trooper can get around 27/28 mpg if i drive it as a 4 speed at 60 mph.
that rig will get 20/24 MPG. maybe down to 17 if loaded to the gunnel's with people, gear, and a 1,500LB or bigger trailer.
17 mpg is the worst ive ever gotten pulling 5,500lbs
you would need to use 1ST gear low range, to get going on any steep grade, so you could call it a 5sp

toyota is the only RV i can think of that can even come close to that sorta mpg.

the cool factor of that ride is just insane :P

hmm thats strange, only reason i can think of is........
if they would have done that, is if the rear end gearing is different than the front end.

the rear end could have been sourced from just about any thing being a custom rear frame for the RV.

i mean if the front axil is still there, theres nothing stopping a person from just putting the drive line in. the RV part has no affect in that area and the shifters look 100% original to the MSG 4WD trans  .

HMM strange :?

Good point, Trooper T. Maybe someone, for whatever reason, changed out the rear gears, and now they don't match the front gears.

Look at the pictures that show both the front and rear wheels- the rear has significantly wider track than the front. That supports the idea that non-stock rear axles were used, with who knows what ratio.
There is also another option- maybe it's a front wheel drive, no rear drive shaft, front hubs locked, hi-4wd, both rear axles are drag axles. OK, not likely, but who knows what some people will do?

If you look close both rears look to be non-drivers.

the 4WD shifter is to the rear, that means in the photos, its in 2HI or 4 LO

4hi would be much more forward.

nope not a clue.

though it has given me many ideas about making a real light 5th wheel RV to pull.
figure i could make a 20' er and be around 2,500LBs
and make it MUCH more aro than that thing too....key thing with small engine

or just find one of the scamp 5th wheel trailers  there about 19' and 2,000LBs
