Anybody ever have problems with door speakers getting in the way of the window? Went to Car Toys and got a stereo system. The guy said that there was no room for 6.5's in the door panels. I think that is Puckie, so wanted to ask the people who really knew.....It seems like all the stereos I have seen pictures of in this forum have door speakers. I'm pretty sure if they can fit door speakers into a Honda, there is enough clearance to get 'em in a Chevy LUV. Anyone know the clearances? :D

I don't like cutting up virgin doors and door panels for speakers. I just mickey mouse hung them in the void where the cab vents are.

i dont think its really clearance so to speak .. its the depth of the door. most modern speakers are somewhat bulky. a few companies offer shallow speakers. i believe kenwood has a fairly decent priced shallow mount speaker.

another option would be (i know its small spaced on the floor to begin with) to build some kick panels and do a small component set up. say maybe a 5 1/4 component setup, woofer and tweeter. or just go crazy and do some kind of fiberglass pod in the door so that you can build up depth ..

another thought is they might make some kind of universal overhead compartment. kinda like for jeeps. ive seen several jeeps where the speakers are mounted overhead .. usually due to lack of doors to begin with

if you have buckets, you can build a small custom box to fit right between the seats and it may be able to double as an armrest.

Ben's old truck came with some big ones in the doors. There was some trimming done inside the door. The windows still work fine too.

I have my speakers in the open area behind the doors. Plenty of room and no modification but a few holes for brackets.

how's it sound with the speakers behind the seats like that.. do you have them pointed up? or straight out sideways.

It's alright. I just have them straight. But, you gotta do the math on this. I'm a 44 y.o. man who doesn't drive the LUV everyday. I don't need it to go boom boom, so the people around me can feel it. :ebiggrin I just need the traffic report and some country or the lighter side of rock.

heh, yeah i understand :) but i don't need it to go boom boom, i'm more of a miniature audiophile, i like what i hear to be hearable. most little speakers like that, imo direction matters a little, as far as tweeters. but if they sound decent back there i may do that and get a set of tweeters for up on the dash... maybe a set of 4x10's like i had seen in another post....

They are 8" and that is about the max you can get.

I have my speakers facing out, away from the sides into the space behind the seat. It is sort of like using the rear speakers in a car. They sound fine to me.

Try putting the big speakers behind the seats then you can mount the tweeters on a single plate bent in the middle slightly so the speakers point out ward and mount them in the factory speaker mount in the dash. Or you could also mount them up above the big speakers in the cab panel just under the seat belt mount.

Haha, I wish I had the option of cutting my own speaker holes. When I bought my luv there were holes already cut in the door panels. Instead of just leaving the hole there I put some speakers in. My windows don't go down farther than about half way (shown in pictures, thats as far as it goes in last pic). =( Sounds good though even with original tape deck. XD

Thanks for the input fellas. The shop put the two in behind the seat. They face each other, but sound good enough. I don't have bucket seats, so center hump is not and option. I'm thinking that door speakers would be fine, but am weighing cutting into a virgin door panel vs building speaker boxes. Looking at making some speaker boxes with 1/4" hard board and covering them with fibre glass maybe putting them in the foot well somewhere.

Build boxes. Don't cut the panels.

i got some component tweeters and put them on my dash kinda facing each window and then my 6" in a box that stands up between my seats, and an old 6" computer subwoofer attached to one of the speaker leads on one of the 6" speakers. sounds pretty good.
