Try using the SEARCH icon out here. There is a $50 paint job thread out here and also many many others topics on the subject. By the way, BLACK is the hardest color to paint and make it look good. Your body work must be PERFECT for it not to show through. Remember, the darker the color (Black, Dark Blue, Purple etc) the better the body work HAS TO BE for it to look good.

Yes, dents and scratches. Body work must be perfect or it will show through like a neon sign. Metallic silver is another color that is tough to paint.

White shows less than most colors... Appliance white is a good color I think.

Depends on what you want and how much you want to spend. Mine was light baby blue and heavy dark rust when I got it in march 06, I was embarassed it was so sick looking. Was living in a motel then and bought ten can of flat black at pamida and some primer that said rusty metal primer heh heh heh! Wire brushed the rust spots put the primer on with a brush and spray painted it in the motel parking lot. Best twenty dollar paint job in town, I say so myself! It still looks decent. Needs a little touch up baby blue showin through. Im happy though. My wheels were white, first thing painted flat black. I didnt tape anything or do any prep work other than wire brushing the heavy rust didnt even wash it, never have. Took about three or four hours total. I did this within a week of buying the truck. Could have doubled my money or made 500.00 bucks a couple of weeks later from a guy I gave a ride to to buffalo wy made a 150.00 for that. Live it Luv it!!

I understand what your are saying with the spray cans. Generally when I refer to painting a vehicle I'm in the mindset that I make all needed body repairs and replacements. Featheredge out all spots, scratches and repairs. Primer, block sand and check panel by panel to make sure it's in as good of shape as my abilities allow me to get them. Seal and paint with auto paint. Now there is alot of prior prep work not mentioned as well as a number of steps I didn't mention between priming and paint. It all depends on the job the individual is looking for. I have seen people literally happy with automotive paint jobs that was applied with a BRUSH 8O . Good luck with whatever path you choose.
