Do you still have '72 instruments?

According to my schematic, the resistor is included in the gauges and the gauge sending units. Otherwise it's one inside the instrument voltage regulator. I did a writeup on replacing the bimetal IVR with a solid state one, (Search "Instrument Voltage Regulator"). Depending on how good you are with electronics you can build the solid state one. You can see if your gauges are working by applying 8.5-9V to the gauges in place of the IVR. A 9V battery won't supply enough current though.

Pretty much all cars built since 1956 have some form of resistor to drop the voltage down to approx 6 volt. Earlier they only had 6 volt batteries.
I've used ones from a Ford and Chrysler products when changing from 6 volt to 12 volt. Never use a Volt A Drop. Stock gauges are not accurate as aftermarket, they are basically relative. Relative as if it is higher or lower than normal.
