Noticed my upper ball joint grease cup is gone on the driver side. Got everyting loose but the nut only comes off so far. I even have the upper arm in a vise clamping the bottom side of the ball joint. Not the small stem the big round part. All my vise does is swivel and the nut will not come any further loose.
Any suggestions or just take it to a shop with a big real solid vise.
Go figure everytime I do something good another bad pops up. :econfused

Got it off. Took a 4 inch grinder to the nut in 4 places and split it.
Anyone has access to a couple of new ones cheap let me know. None on ebay except lowers and one company that has no pics of the upper. 46 dollars apiece shipped.
I got lucky 2 years ago and got 2 for 15 dollars but went bye with the truck. Sholud have kept that truck with the nissan motor in it.

http://www.rockauto.com has them.

Be forewarned though, I had to order them 3 times before I got both uppers WITH the castle nuts. They kept sending me one with and one without. It was really annoying, and their return process is a PITA. I think at the time they had free shipping on orders over $50. If I'd been in a hurry I wouldn't have messed with them, after paying shipping back to them, twice, I could have just gone to NAPA...

Usually a good experience with them, but that NUT is apparently a keeper. One of them they sent me even had the bag opened and then scotch taped shut. It was obviously missing the nut...

For me it was pretty much straight forward easy except for the big nut. If you could find a socket big enough you might have a shot to get it off and maybe it will come off anyway. I believe when I tried to use a pipe wrench it actually applied pressure on the 2 points of contact. In other words I pinched it and the more I pulled on the wrench the more pinch applied. Just like litemup I had no choice but to remove it by other means than unscrewing. You might have luck using lubricant in advance so that it has plenty of time to soak in. Just be sure to have a grinder or torch or something in case all else fails.

Yep very easy replacement. I think it takes a 2 1/4 inch o bigger socket. Spray it with penetrating oil and let it set. I ended up grinding through mine and split them. Once you get them loose sometimes they will drop down out of the lip on the bottom of the arm and then the whole thing turns.
