Hi everyone, i finally completed my drum to disk conversion and had a few interesting issues along the way...i have 1980 chev luv and used disk parts off a 1981 holden rodeo which all fitted well. but what i am really confused about is there is a little bracket that sits on the back of the calipers and stops the brake line hitting (brake line goes through it) anything when turning is occuring. for the right hand side the bracket fits perfectly and sits on top of the caliper but the left hand side is a different story as the bracket mounts on the bottom (see braket pic) and when it is on it does not allow the wheel to turn properly at the bottom(see pics added here for what i mean, i dont have the bracket installed on the left hand side and the line is just drooping down). its wierd because its as is if there are two right hand side calipers as thats how i bought em in a set of disks and calipers but they missed bracktets so presumed they forgaot to add them when the wreckers took em off the rodeo...so i went out to an old rodeo (4wd) close to home and pulled off the bits (brakets) i though i required and only one side fits...

I thought that after i put my first left hand side disk and calipers on that it was incorrect but it cant go on any other way unless the caliper was facing the wrong way...but i compared the back of the drum to back of disk and the triagular shape of the tie rod end and ball joins and they only go on one way... I also got a ruller and measured and compared the holes between the disk and drums where the bolts go through and the hole on the bottom ball joint is slightly bigger sothat the way i put the disk and calipers on each side. anyway thought i would ask you and hopefully you can shed some light on the matter...but what i aim to do is probably hook a spring up and hold the left hand brake line and it will be held away from rubbing on anything. Also by the way the new lines cost me $110.00. I got everything on car and bled the brakes and tried to drive it but it obviously needs a wheel alignment so thats the next thing on the list and then hopefully once it is done i can use it as a daily driver...is there anything else i need to consider...?

cheers shaggs

The correct brackets look like theese, they are mirror images of each other. They are not reversable, they will only fit the side they are supposed too because of the dowel on the caliper.

Ok thanks for that ozluvtrucker, I simply when out to vehicle this morning and in my post on this issue I commented that its as if i have 2 RH side clipers (i just checked and the caliper on the left hand side has a R on it) :esurprised so I will be off to the wreckers tomorrow to get the correct side :D .

I do have a set of 4wd calipers but dont know if they will fit and anyway the wreckers owes me the right part...hey also mate did you end up getting a window for your car?

cheers

Yeah the wreckers you sugested came thru 4 me, many thanks. The 4x4 calipers should fit when used with the correct rotor. Have you changed your drum master cylinder to the disk brake type? Also i noticed you have coloum shift 4 speed, this is easily changed to floor shift using the stick out of Holden/Isuzu Geminis.

No mate i havent changed the master cylinder but refer to the pic here for the drum vs disk master cylinder and they look basically the same (except the bigger part where the fluid goes into is in a different spot) or is there an internal difference? or if they need changin can i just change the plastic parts or does the whole unit need changing?

And in relation to the gearstick modification I wouldnt mind doing that also but do i have to cut into the metal for this transformation? where would i make the hole if it is needed? when i brought the car the previous owner has stuck carpet accross the area where the stick would go so i am wondering if under that section if their is a plate that i can remove to put the stick in...also the stick i need does it matter if it comes out of a petrol or diesel/4-5 speed gearbox? :D

cheers

My understanding is that the master cylinders are valved differently internally. I have not had one apart to confirm this. Also the bias front to rear changes when you go to discs. The primary stopping power is focused more heavily on the front.

Hope others will correct me or add to this, I'll be doing a similar swap in the near future.
