This topic has been talked about before. Use the search option and you'll see what has come up. A couple of trucks have been reworked with great success. It will also provide more options for header installation. An extra added bonus.

I currently have the crossmember cut out and torsion bars removed.
I have QA1 coil over shocks and they fit nicely. I am welding in mounts on the top for the shock to mount to.
I will have pics in a few weeks.....my schedule is really busy right now....ugh......

You cut the crossmember out? Do you plan on reinstalling it or building a stronger one to fit? The crossmember is vital in keeping the front end from flexing, you can twist the frame without it.

HAH! You got me. I assumed that you cut the front crossmember to build up new structure for the coil overs. Im relieved to hear that. Carry on then and i hope you post some pics of the mod as you go along.

I would think taking out the torsion bars and that big crossmember would take out about 20 or 30 pounds.

ok rick I just got back from vacation and I will get some pics for you soon.
I have to go out of town this weekend to race, so it might be next week before I get the pics though.
here is a link to the QA1 shocks from jegs.
http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ ... rmenbr=361
and the springs
http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ ... rmenbr=361
I am using 350lb. springs to start off with. I wasn't sure to use 350 or 450....so I started small.

I put my on afriends race car scales the other day.without bed, int, and front sheet metal it was 1730lbs. I figure I won't add much more than 500lbs and the QA catalog says upto like 2500lbs use 350 springs.i got a set of Aldin shocks from a friend that are new.have to buy new springs, but still be less than 1/2 of new

Okie dokie luv4me. I am gonna run the 1.8 with a few mods to warm it up. I will have a few inches of lift to fit a set of 33's under it. I will also have a custom flatbed similar to this...
Image

That is pretty much what I will make my truck look like. What kind of springs and shocks will I need? I don't know how to figure out wheel travel, load centering and spring rate.

Torsion bars are ok for stock stuff, but I can't afford to drop 125.00 + on a shock. And another 30 bux for the spring. Thats like, ummmm let me see *under breath* carry the 1, ELEVENTY FOUR DOLLARS!! That jegs stuff is nice, but I am not making a show winner or a straight line truck. This is, for lack of better words, a fuckaround buggy. That is all I want it for. Granted I will have alot of dough wrapped up in it and I will have a nice paint job, but not a show winner by any means.
