The "DIY" paint and polish is finished... now I know how poor Daniel`san felt :D

Here's a bit of a timeline. Some of these are not great pictures, had to use my Razr to take some as my digi-cam batteries always seem to be dead at the worst time.

you did that with a paint roller? how many coats? can you use masking tape on the finished paint job? I'm interested, but, I'll need to paint the 4x4 and stripes over the new paint? Will the masking tape "peel" off the new paint??????

Roller, yes
Coats 10
Masked yesterday to repaint the black skirt, no problem. I was a little paranoid so before I stuck the tape to the paint, I'd dab or drag it accross the leg of my jeans just in case.

And, Thanks, I kinda like it

Just saw your posts in the Moparts thread to end all threads & had to come back here to post my most exalted admiration. Looks great!!
I wish I had cut mine when it was fresh with a buffer & some compound but it's been a few months now.
I think the easiest coarse now is gonna be an agressive wetsand(1000?), 1 more coat of paint, & buff within 48 hrs.

Congrats Mr 79LUV'r!! WELL DONE!!!!!

There will be some that simply will not believe you rolled it.
Don't bother trying to convince 'em otherwise, just smile.

Thanks man, glad you like it. Hope any of that info helps ya out. Sounds like you got a good idea, wetsand what you have, wash, wipe down with mineral spirits. Only I would do 2 thin coats, better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it right? Are you set on which paint you are re-coating with? Look forward to seeing your success.

'bout $100 bux, give or take.
Even at twice that, I'd still do it again. Very satisfing to stand back and say "I did that", thanks to the info from the guys at Moparts forum.

That's cool, my oldest son just bought himself an 89 Chevy pickup. Looking forward to getting him started on his. Should be a good cadidate, has the usual late 80's era horrible clearcoat peel.

Looks great! I also have to repaint my Chevy Luv....I have been focusing on all the mechanicals over the past year and have it running smoothly now.....time to focus on the exterior.

Funny you should mention the 1980s era clear coat peel. I have a '80 Luv and a first generation '89 SHO and both have the clear coat peel. My SHO runs likes like a bastard on fire but definitely looks like a modern day rat rod with all the primer, clear peel and a few dents...:) I guess I like that look or I would have done something to it by now...

Hats off to you!

Ok damnit....what's the deal with points?

Burned and replaced a set over the weekend after the engine did one of those rare "diesel" sputter to a stop shutoffs. Installed my MSD system earlier , drove to WalMart with the wife shutdown fine, stopped to get some other stuff, shutdown fine, drove home, was commenting at how much better it started and ran in general, also noticed my tach had stopped doing jiggly dance when I accelerated past 3000 rpm, now it was nice and smooth like a tach oughta be. Arrived home, truck did another "diesel" sputter shutdown. Came back out about 10 minutes later. No start.....sigh. I may have to buy a sack full of points.

Anyway, here's the MSD rig installed, wasn't too hard to do inspite of the strange instruction sheet.

So this MSD is an electronic ignition system that still utilizes points? :?

Far as I can tell by the instructions, unless there's some way to bypass the points that I'm not aware of. That was actualy what I had in mind getting the system... being as how I remeber hating point ignition so much. Maybe I need a different distributor system with it. The guy at O'rileys mention a "mallory" something or other he ut in his old Impala, that eliminated points, said it droped into the dizzy where the points used to be.... no idea :?

http://www.msdignition.com/pdf/5200_frm18162.pdf

Anyone out there have and MSD setup on a stock Luv, that does not use points?

I don't recall mallory making that, I thought it was/is Pertronix. Also, most points run 6 volts, there is a ballast resistor wire dropping the voltage down to six, so did you do away with the ballast wire when yoi installed the MSD set up? The box may be putting too much juice to the points, causing them to fail. Just shooting in the dark here...

I also intsalled the MSD .08ohm ballast resistor, honeslty I would have thought is was all the MSD setup fault, except this same thing happened to me over the weekend before the MSD was even outta the box. So now I'm kind chasing my tail wonder which was coincedence etc.

For now, I have taken out the Blaster coil thinking it may be the culprit, now running the MSD 5200+ballast resistor+ stock coil.

Any clue as to what causes the occaisional hessitant engine at shutdown?

I'd consider using the Pertronix conversion. Ditching the points might be a good thing. I had a 69 firebird with the Sprint 6 overhead cam engine that kept eating the points. Bought the Ignitor set up, problem solved. It was about a 20 minute install. Cost about 50 bucks back in 98. I think I got mine @ Autowrong, but I can't remember. I think Summit or Jeg's sells 'em.
