I was just curious if anyone has pull the dash completly out and redid their dash

I have an ole 1945 GM/Yellow Truck that I would like to pull the dash out of and put in the LUV

I guess if everything measures right I can just cut them out and weld in the new dash with a little modifying...

I dunno..... just thinking out loud I guess

well I cut mine out

and to do it right would involve some work of

covering carpet and removing seat(s)

pulling all heater connections

wiring unplugged or undone from tabs

steering wheel unbolted from bracket

take off guages and glove compartment and vents unscrew

then find spot welds and drill them out if you can find them or carefully sawzall the thing apart kinda dangerous

and installing probably want to cover/protect windshield if you weld the new dash in or can make some brackets to bolt it in which might be a better choice.

I am kinda thinking as I type so I might have missed a few steps

did you put yours back in or change it out for another?

The other truck still has its origional guages, glove box and alot of other stuff too... thats part of the reason why I wanted to do it...
And I remembered that the cab was somewhat narrow...

How did you put the new one back in? Did you reweld it and use brackets to put it back in?

Im really good at tearing stuff up...its the install that I'm mostly worried about...lol

Well aren't we all Haha

yeah I didn't put a new dash in but did cut mine out

I have no idea what you new dash looks like but you could have some sort of brackets made for it.

and you want to switch guages? If so you might have some tricky stuff their to deal with maybe.

You can also mock up a dash using some cardboard with the dash out and get an idea for maybe a new dash as well if you have wood or metal skills.
wood maybe an easier way to make a dash. Might not be good looking but can get some foam they use in dashes and sculpt it then put some vinyl or leather like material over and "voila"

Lots of work and effort though

1/2" box tube upper and lower welded to cab and 3 straps across the top.I put this in when the windshield was out of the truck.

I took some measurements, it looks like IF I decided to use it, I will have to streach it some.... I think its 7 inches shorter than the LUVs dash

Probably going to be too much work... I dunno
I havent decided on what Im going to do yet.... but Id still like to do something different with the dash in the LUV

hmmm vintage rustic look

You could cut the middle of dash and have a formed piece of sheet metal 7" wide or whatever it is. It might be a little tricky cause the way the dash is formed but maybe not. Cool Dash though

Good Luck

Thats kind of my thought too... on the sides, in the middle away from the trim

Its a good looking dash... Id hate to just let it sit there and rot....

yeah only about 8-10 k to restore it ouch. Yeah I used to have a 55 f 100 and I kinda gave up on it and traded it. Its a lot of work to fix one up involving blood sweat and money. Well worth it once done however

One day I might pick one up when I am ready

you can do this project though in your luv and it would be unique
and extra people to get involved helps. except on the fitting part you should do that part yourself!!!

Well Let me know if you might ever need any help or advice I ll try and help a brother out

I had origionally thought about it, but its in really bad shape, no frame, the front fenders are folded under the cab.... no hood or front end... cab has rusted through and the list goes on and on...

After I pulled the only good glass out of it, and the front turn signal lights, I had found out that people were buying them in fair to good shape for no more than 50 bucks

This one was 40 or 50 bucks....

That's cool. But before you cut it up, try advertising it on this site. You hopefully will find someone that will give some money for it. This is a nation wide club that is into antique trucks. I'm a member in the so. cal. chapter. Thanks.

that one is another truck... i guess I wasnt too clear on that...

the one Im plan on pulling the dash out of ( Im kinda getting talked into it now...lol) is all smashed up....

I had to dig about a foot in the dirt to pull the turn signals off...I was hopeing the glass on them would still be good...but they wernt

Ill take another pic of the whole thing when I go back out there.... trust me the only thing worth anything would be the dash and the one pane of glass that I already pulled

Im waiting on the approval to cut the '45 dash out...
The truck is actually on hunting land that a few of us lease out... So I need to get the owners permission first...
I dont think its going to be a problem though
