I am thinking about building a tube grill for my 79 luv and I need some ideas on what materials to use and maybe some design ideas. If we can come up with a design that is not hard to build maybe I can make some for more than just me. I dont mind making jigs or anything and I have access to a shop with a metal lathe, hydralic press and a few other metal working tools.

I would probably use aluminum for the build

Here is a few pictures of what is on my truck. I didn't make it as it came with the truck, not even sure what it is made of. If you want me to, I can get ahold of the original owner and see how he got it. It bolted up to the radiator support. It needs to be rechromed!! Hope this helps.

I would guess thats an original Stull grille.

As far as building new ones, if I like what you make i'd probably buy one. I think steel would be best so it could be painted or chromed. Aluminum needs to be polished all the time and I allready have enough of that to do with a Peterbilt and 9 axle trailer. 8O

I thought be cool to take the oringal grill as a template and then make one with sheet metal. =) Although the tubes look like they'd be fast to build.

Thanks for the pictures. That is great I can get an idea how to design it. It will be after the first of the year before I can start. I had an idea of using the stock grille as a template and have a local compnay cut it out of 1/8" aluminum. there is a large number of companies with water jet and plasma CNC mills but I am not sure of pricing. I may look at that as an option too. But I agree the tube is easier and possibly cheaper.

On the picture how big are the tube diameters?
Thanks for all the responses. Keep the ideas coming.

The tubes are 1/2" inside diameter and 5/8" outside diameter.

Yeah, I know it doesn't look real good. But it looks better on the front side. I need to get it rechrome someday. I think the chrome job back in the early 80s wasn't a real good job?? Really it is from snow drift hopping here in the Iowa winters!!! :D :D

Oh sorry my bad. Now I catch ya. Right now the grille is in my garage and the grille is laying on the bench. So it would be easy pickens!! But right now we are having freezing rain suppose to change to snow later tonight. So if you come you better have your studded tires on!! :D

I will send an email to the original owner to see if he remembers where the grille came from.

what do you think about say conduit electricians use. real easy to bend and is somewhat cheap and then have it chromed or paint it a color.

Conduit might work. Not sure how good it would weld up?? The original owner said he got the grille at a local speed shop in Ca when he lived out there. Thought is was Superior Products.

when I was building trailers we would take sections of cut conduit and form them to fit underneath the utility trailers or flatbeds to protect wiring instead of using all wiring loom we would only use little loom.

your grille wildluvracing reminded me of that conduit is why haha!

now that I think of it I don't think you could chrome it it is galvanized. but maybe????

hope that helps you out bama_luv

Just throwing some ideas out
