 Post subject: one wire alternator
PostPosted: Mon Jul 05, 2004 9:24 am
i need help! i have a 305 out of an 84 camaro in my 77 and an alternator for the same car. i never really have been able to get this thing to charge right. right now i have a single wire coming off the back of the alt to the pos side of the starter and then two wires into one off the plug in on the side of the alt to get a charge. here is the problem, if i don't unhook the battery when i shut the truck off it drains the battery dead and the alt will get hot with the truck not even running. what am i doing wrong or do i need a different alt?

2nd part

i also have a problem when i am driving and then shut it off it won't start again until it cools off considerably. i have only seen 200 degrees once all the rest has been 180 -190. do i need a different starter or something else. the motro is stock with like 110,000 miles on it . HELP ME!

Go here for a diagram on wiring the alt: http://www.autorewire.com/tech/charging ... nandd.html This is The diagram I used when I wired mine. Works great! As for the starter problem, This is common if the exhaust is too close to the starter. Try a heat shield between the starter and the exhaust.

you may want to install a ford starter relay away from the heat. I do this on all of my rides just to make it simple
