The alternator wiring on a stock LUV would drive an electrical engineer crazy! However here goes, the regulator has two relays inside it, one to control the alternator output, the second one is used to send a signal to the relay box over on the right fender and this relay turns on your fuel pump. If you are using a one wire alternator, which is what I do on all of my V8 conversions, I toss the alternator regulator and trim off the wires.Makes things a lot more simple that way, I run the fuel pump wire to an electrical switch, either the keyed wires, or much safer install a oil pressure relay that turns on the fuel pump when there is enough oil pressure. This prevents the pump from running when the engine is off or if you are involved in an accident, the pump shuts off.
Just run the large "one" wire from the new alternator directly to the starter large terminal, the one from the battery, and you won't have any more problems. But you will have to use a volt meter to check if the battery is charging. Inside the wiring loom that runs down the inside of the left fender and goes under the radiator over to the right side? Inside this loom are two very large black wires, about 12 guage, these connect together inside this loom up by the radiator, so you can tap into either of these for a large current draw item or to charge the battery. Hope this helps,
