Im in the final stages of getting my truck ready for paint. I have done the work myself and with the help of my brother the semi expert. I am planning on blocking the truck starting in a minute after I get off the computer but my brother isnt here and I dont want to bother him at work so my question is what grit paper should I use in sanding the final coat of primer? All the mud work is done and there are several coats of primer covering the whole truck.

personally id go with 1500 or 2000 grit wet sand and use a spray bottle with soapy water

not if you are going to paint it you use 1500 and higher for orange peel or buffing you use like 220 -320 for paint i have used 220 my self to set up for the primer/paint the best is the redish/purple scuff pad for all the tight spots and we all have different ways so pick the one for you

yes what he said dont use the 1500/2000 , you want somthing for the paint to bite into... use the 1500/2000 when all is done and wet sand then polish and it will give you a great paint job

Exactly, I prefer the 320 right before the paint job. 240 would be fine. The less sand scratches the better.

8O 8O

2000 is for clear coat sanding for buffing, I used 400 on the primer and hit it with a red scotchbrite pad before laying down the base coat when I painted this, during the summer.

also did this to my blazer back in the early 90's! 8O

Cool deal thanks for all the info. By the way the falcon looks cool I had an elcamino in high school that looked pretty close to the same color. when I first started on my truck that is the color I wanted but after I started sanding yesterday and seeing how my body work is turning out I dont think that is the right color for me at this point. I try hard to only do a small amount of work to it here and there because my patience level is very short and I want it to turn out nice and I dont have thousands of dollars to have it farmed out by a professional shop. Also on the other hand I have decided to wait for paint until I get the new monster motor finished up and installed so I dont accidently scratch anything in that process. One other good thing my brothers old boss and friend told me when Im ready for paint he would spray it in his paint boothe because I cant paint.

grey and purple primer is my trade mark Im just getting tired of it. Besides that I would eventually like to have it all sealed up so if something happens I can drive it in the rain. Not that I want to drive my truck in the rain Ive got a pretty decent power plant in it with a locker in the rear end gets kinda hairy on dry pavement.

Just throwing this out as an another option, alot of technical schools will only charge you the cost of materials, some may add 5-25% of the material costs.

I'm too much of a perfectionist to do my own body work, so thats the route that I am planning on when it comes time for it.

If I did it, I would nit-pick every little thing. Then when it was done I would always look for that one spot that I didnt like.

My '78 stepside is pretty squirrely in the rain and it just has a built Impulse 1.9 4-banger and a 5 speed with 240/60's on the back.

I have to take it pretty easy on sharp corners and starting out on a hill or I'll be spinning and sliding all over the place. And passing cars on the freeway when it's raining cats and dogs out has to be done carefully. So no dropping it in 4th gear, punching it hard, and whipping around slow pokes in the lousy rain for me or it just starts breaking the darn tires loose.

And when it snows or the roads are icy...it just stays parked in the garage.

And I definitely know how you guys feel about body work and painting being a PITA. It's probably my least favorite thing on any vehicle to do. It's just too dusty, too messy, and takes way too much time and effort to get it right.

But of course being the cheapskate old geezer that I am...I somehow force myself to do it...lol

I used 800 grit on the primer prior to painting with my Rustoleum rattle cans. I am no expert though when it comes to this stuff. I put on 5 coats of paint. It has been curing for almost 3 weeks now, time to start color sanding soon I guess. I will have to get my pictures finished soon so you can all laugh at my inexperienced job.

Hey...if you're happy with it and it's keepin' it from rustin' away - then that's a good enough paint job.

Aint nobody gonna do any laughin' at you or anybody else here for tryin' to do the best ya can with whatcha got and watcha can afford.

I've been workin' on mine for over 2 years now...and I'm still not done. And it sure aint no show truck.

But it's paid for, I built it from scratch with my own 2 hands, and it makes me smile every time I drive it. What more does any man need?

yep , had mine for over a year now and still not ready for my first good primer coat yet. At least it runs and i can take it out if not raining. People ask when it will all be the same color. Who cares. I don't It is still fun to run tegardless. At least I have one and they don't.

Yeah, all the above is true. :) At least it is in better shape than is was when I bought it in 2004. I have been working on it more serious for the past year off and on. Here is some quick before and so far pics. I still am in the process of uploading half of the in between pics. When I get them all done I will start a new topic in general forum with my pics. Feel free to laugh your ass off at the before pics! Those were the day I got it home in July of 2004. 8)

Here are the pics from about 3 weeks ago...

The pics in my garage are a little fuzzy due to poor lighting and an old digital camera. Once I get it all back together and outside I will take some nicer pics.
