Almost all earlier imports interior - dome lights suck. I want to be able to read a map, see my hand or anything else.

I would like a dome light in the center of the cab, but I don't know how it could be mounted. a overhead console would too, but same problem.

I know most VW aircooled cars had the light mounted on a piece of sheetmetal above the drivers door. I have seen lights mounted on the rear of the cab with a simular setup.

How could a light or console be mounted after paint. You could not spot weld. So what would work.

Richard

I fabbed one out of wood and installed it in the body shop I was working for at the time and installed it in his dodge 4 x 4. I mounted the box where the visors originally mounted, mounted the visors at the bottom of the side facing the driver, then came across the center with a strip and mounted to the back of the cab above the rear window. I cut a piece of sheet metal, drilled holes to match up with the visor mounts and welded a nut in the center of the sheet to mount the wood base to. The side facing the driver was open on the ends for access to the bolts and the visors in the up position kept stuff in. With the overhead console the visors were rarely needed anyway. Sorry, I don't have any pics. The wood was maple that I stained after I was satisfied with the fit and it looked good.

Another option I am going to do. Almost all newer cars/trucks have rear view mirrors with map lights on them. Get on ebay and type in rear view mirror compass and see the fancy ones you can get for really cheap. There is even a 3rd party company that makes one with a outside temperature sensor you mount by your bumper.

I think VW/Saab/Volvo dome lights from the 80's will go in the opening for a stock LUV interior cab dome lamp. They are wired 3 way, so that you can use the switch, or they come on with the door, or you can shut it off. LED upgrade bulbs are available on ebay. I have one here somewhere, but haven't had time to test fit it.

Here's a site I've had great results with, especially for dash bulbs. Just replacing the incan's with LED's can make a huge difference in night time driving. They are cheap, ship fast and the bulbs last at least as long as the stock incandescent bulbs but run much cooler...

http://www.superbrightleds.com/

I'm also considering adding a footwell entry lamp below the dash, sort of 'luxury' car style. You can snag these off of 70's-90's Lincolns and Cadillacs and even some Ford trucks.

Guess I'm just lazy, I'd prefer to replace a bulb (with a much brighter one) or add in a couple of wires and put the lights where I want them. Good luck, whatever you end up doing.

You can take a look here too...
