anyone have any good ideas for installing speakers in their luv. I don't really want to put them in the doors. Has anyone done anything different than Door Spears?

Been trying to find a good spot myself, have tried a few of the obvious behind the seat, have found that about 3/4 up from the floor pointing downward helps to take some of the "I'm a speaker in a thin steel box" twang out of the sound.

Another thought I had was under the seats, am working on some decent boxes for them.

i got 6x9's behind the seat in the corner of the cab and since my door panels already had holes, i threw some 6 1/2's into the doors.. i've seen some put a small sub and speakers behind the seat.. but you'd have to have the seat all the way forward for that

you have (4) options in the luv.

1. build component kick panels and do 5 1/4" w/tweeters or 6 1/2" w tweeters. Or what ever you want

2.install the in the doors 4" - 6 1/2"

3.install the behind the seat on the B pillar above the seats 3 1/2" or 4"

4. install them on the sides of the B pillar level with your back. You will have to build a speaker plate to mount to.

My 72 Luv had two tweeters mounted on the upper door, two 4" mids, and four 10" subs in a sealed box. The cab and the bed had been cut to accommodate them. One day the wood they used started to swell. So I replaced it with a new one and put a fiberglass layer over the wood so it would never get wet again.

I have 6 1/2 speakers in my overhead console along with a vintage Kraco radio and vintage Panasonic equalizer! Gotta love old school! :)

I cut two holes in the kickerpanels and put a pair of 5 1/4s there. Seem to work good.

I used the space under the B pillar to build some ported enclosures. I figured out the dimensions from a speaker-building book.

The port is tuned to about 75 Hz to accentuate the bass.

It takes no space and sounds real good (at least it did until someone trashed my stereo.

I also have 6.5" in the doors.

Got creative and mounted two 4 inch speakers in lids of tupperware bowls. Snapped the lids onto the bowls and now I have watertight speakers!
Bowls/speakers are inset into lower side panels behind driver and passenger seat (perfect fit - no cutting). Used extra length of speaker wire and can pop out bowls and set on hood, roof, bed, etc. for those outdoor festivities.

1okey2go -> Care to share your design? Is there a box of some sort behind the 6x9's? How long is the resonator tube? Do you have buckets or a bench? (Looks like the tube might hit a bench seat...) Looks like you routed the speaker wiring up and over the door?

ctmandu -> Do you have any drawings or dimensions for your overhead setup?

OzLuvTrucker -> Is everything you do spotless? Your speaker box is awesome!

I'm hoping to do a relatively clean install in the '75 and I really like the hideaway feature of these setups. I'm sure there are others here who'd like to see some drawings too....

Anyone tried something like this in the footwells? The 6.5's are 5 1/2" deep, which seems like they would stick out too much...

Nukeday, here's what I did:

1) Get in there and seal any cracks, holes, etc. that you can reach. I used siliconized acrylic caulk. It's a little denser than plain silicone rubber.

There's no speaker box, the chamber becomes the box.

2) Get some of that acoustic padding that's sometimes in the back of speakers. Glue it to the truck body behind the speaker. It doesn't sound real bad without this, but it damps the resonance of the truck body. I don't know where to get it. A buddy gave me some. I used contact cement to glue it.

3) Make a speaker plate to mount the speaker. I used 1/8" aluminum that I had laying around. I made a cardboard template first. I wish I had saved it, so I could get you dimensions, but I didn't.

4) Mount the speaker and plate. Seal the plate all around with the caulk. (If you care how it looks, unlike me, you can avoid smearing the caulk all over.) For mounting the top and front, I just screwed it down. For the back, I made a couple of angle brackets. I didn't screw the bottom. On the bottom is a big crack, because the body panel 'dips' there. I just smeared a lot of the caulk to fill the crack.

I ran the speaker wires out the bottom. You can see them in the first picture. (The cable you see coming out the top is a CB antenna cable. Remember those?)

5) Now the fun part: The resonator tube is 3" ABS (yeah, it's sewer pipe), exactly 4" long. I mounted it to the bracket by drilling and tapping some #4 holes into the end and screwing it down from the back side. Again, I wish I still had my template for the bracket, but I don't.

If I remember correctly, taking into account the volume of the chamber and the length of the tube, it peaks at around 75-100 Hz. I think it sounds pretty good.

Although the speaker grill says Jensen, I actually used some Infinity speakers.

Oh, and yes, I have bucket seats. I don't know if it would interfere on a bench seat.

I designed this because I, like you, wanted something that didn't take up space. I still have room to throw all my trash behind the seats.

Hope this helps.

Awesome, thanks for the outline on this. I think the panel templates can be made up pretty easily, what I was really after was the tube design. Thanks for sharing this...
