Proud owner of '79 LUV ( bought new for my first car and still have) and in the process of swapping stock engine for a SBC. Question is where's the best source to obtain a SBC? I would also need the transmission to go with it; seems most people are going with the turbo 350. Thanks for any advice

All depends on your budget. I would look in the classifieds for a cheap car or truck that has what you want (engine, trans and maybe other parts) that way you have all the brackets and stuff for it. You can get this stuff from a junker etc. After you get what you want off of it maybe you can sell some of the other stuff. Just need a place to store it. Hope I helped and welcome to the site. :)

Get a turbo 350 rebuild it with a TCI trans kit your choice of converter and it will last as long as your truck will. I build these trans and use them behind big blocks with no problems if you set them up for the job. Do not trust junk yard trans as they are already used up. With the clutch pacs set up and a heavy duty sprag they will take any thing you can dish out in your LUV. PS stay away from the 350C models as they can't be built to hold up but they do have parts that can help build a better 350.

try ebay. that's where I'm getting my 4.3. I have a 4.3 w/5speed from a wrecked 94 s10. however it became a nightmare with missing parts or destroyed parts that needs replacing. Cutting bait fromf this nightmare and getting it all from one source.

You need to get connected with some local gearheads. I did just that in Savannah Ga. Thats how i got ahold of a 4 bolt 350 that im building in to a 383. Scoring parts cheap is also a benefit. Intakes, carbs, valve covers, distributors and the like can be available cheap to a fellow hot rodder. Something like a trans can be a steal because it taking up too much room in someones garage. (Wives have a habit of forcing husbands to unload parts because they're tired of living with the mess). Find some gearheads at work. They'll have stuff and their friends have stuff and their friends have stuff. It's amazing that for eveyone looking for parts, there's somebody looking to sell parts.
