Does your '73 motor have the overhead cam like the '80 model? I'm not sure what year they switched over. I think it was '76.

Hi Ben,
yes the early model has the overhead cam, they changed the LUV in 76,
yahI see some differences when I go to switch the 80 into the 73, hoping someone has done this and can let me know of any major problems they ran into.....( im guessing that it will bolt to the bell housing). Thanks Tim

I just got done putting a 85 isuzu G180 motor into my 74 chevy luv. The major problems were:

1. converting from a hydraulic clutch to a cable
2. making some adapter plates to link up the orginal motor mounts
3. hooking up the radiator hoses since they were on opposite sides of the engine.

I am using it as my daily driver now and it sure is better that the old engine. Let me know if you run into problems and maybe I can help with pictures. I am a computer novice but I might be able to send some pictures if you need.

Good Luck, John B.

Tim,
I used the engine and tranny from the 85 Isuzu (76 and later Luv). My orginal tranny was noisy and I don't think it would match up to the later engine. On converting to a cable I removed the hydraulic stuff and got a brake/clutch pedal bracket assembly from a 76 Luv and it bolted right into my 74. I had to drill a hole in the firewall where the cable comes through and make a bracket to hold the cable housing at the firewall. I also made a patch to cover the hole were the old hydraulic cylinder was.

I hope this helps, John
