Has anyone ever tried the vega torque converter in a hot rod type application? I have heard that its like a cheap alternative to a stall converter. I have heard this from 2 people now and one guy said you can get up to 2800 rpms of stall out of. Just curious about it.

behind a V8 they won't last long.
We had one in a monza with a 327, and after a while it felt like it stalled forever.
it is a good alternative aside from a stock non stall converter, but you will lose alot of horsepower through it if it decides to go.

I don't think so. I had a friend in HS who owned 10 or so vegas (including a panel delivery wagon) and was into swapping v8's into them. I think he would've had one if they'd come with them.

I was gonna say it dosnt sound right to have a factory v8 vega or Im sure everone and their brother would want one. The only one I have ever seen in real life was one my step dad built when he was a kid and I only got to ride in it once before he sold it.

yes they were Vega converters and it does not matter what engine was in it only the trans had to be a TH 350. as for the thing about the vega comming with a V_8 Only in 1970 and 71 I think it was there was a v-8 option when ordering one from the factory. they made like 225 one year and 275 the next. they used the all aluminum 215 buick v-8. they still use a version of this engine in some of the landcrusiers in the other countries. The converter I used came from behind a 4 cyld.vega with a TH350 trans. the weight of your vehicle and torque of your engine deturmine the ammount of Stall speed.

What is it that actually makes the vega converter different than any other converter for the th-350?

I think they are an 8" converter (really small)
and stalled for the 4 cylinder engines.

I had a friend who raced a vega with the factory aluminum V8 in it.
He said it would haul.

with an 8 inch converter it seems like the drop in rotating mass would a huge difference.
