The easy swap is a 1.9L G200 Isuzu motor. You can find them in Isuzu pickups and Troopers up to about 1985, and some in early S10 pickups. It is externally exactly the same as the stock LUV G180 1.8L motor.

Beyond that you can look into swapping a 2.3L 4ZD1 Isuzu motor found in Impulses, pickups, Troopers (86 only), some Amigos even up to 1993. Some models had it in a carb version which would simplify wiring, or you could get a FI one and swap the wiring and control module over too. There is also the 2.6L 4ZE1 isuzu motor, found in a lot of stuff after 1987. FI only, but the 2.3L carb intake and stuff will fit on it as the block/head are externally the same. The exhaust manifolds are different from the LUV, but dump in basically the same spot. You just need a different, larger end on to bolt to the manifold, which you could get with the motor and splice it into your current pipe. You could also get a 5Spd trans with either motor that would help you out a bit on gas mileage and top speed, though it takes some fab work to get it in there. (mounts, driveline shortening)

For the extremist, Isuzu Impulses came with a turbo 2.0L (4ZC1) that could also bolt to your tranny, but would need a lot of figuring on wiring and so forth to get it to fit. Exhaust work would also be required.

All in all, the G200 is the easy way to go. You get a tad bigger motor, and no fabrication worries to getting it to fit. You can also grab the distributor and such for electronic ignition with it (see the info section of the main site here for info) and get a little better drivability with little effort. You did ask though, so I though I'd give you some bigger ideas in case you wanted something to dream about. ;)

How many horseys does the 800 put out 800XL? The 1.8L does 85 (mangaed to get 87 out of the one with some tweaking and converting over the points, but the 1.9L should be around what 90-95 HP?

800Xl, what was the difference between a Mikado and a regular truck? My mind is still reeling from banging it on concrete.

Mostly just interior stuff. The Mikado has fancy ( I think ugly) door panels and carpet and cloth seat, pleather (plastic/leather) gears shift knob and 3 spoke steering wheel. The Mikado also has swithes in the door jamb that turned on the dome light when the door was opened.

The fuel injected 1.9L G200 used in the early Isuzu Impulse cars rates at 90HP, I'd bet a carb version would come in a bit under that. We're not talking about much gain here really. :)

rondog has the mikado stuff right: nice steering wheel, deluxe shifter knob, door switches for dome light, nicer seat, door panels, carpet, and a couple of badges on the bed. Nothing mechanical is better or different at all.

It says up there that you could use the 2.0l turbo engine out of an impulse? Has anyone done this swap? What are those rated at, power wise?

2.0L Turbo Impulse was rated at 140HP. I've heard rumors of people that did the swap, but never seen a truck it was done to, or met anyone that did it themselves.

So depending on what year G200 you get, it will either be carb or FI?
Say I throw in a G200, would I have do anything differnt for smog?

Also I'm wondering if anyone has tried to do Turbo 4ZC1? I heard Grimace toyed with the idea a long time ago, but it was pretty costly.

The G200 is pretty much the same no matter what it comes out of, just the intake manifold is different on the FI ones that were put in Impulses. All the G200s in PUPs/Troopers are carb versions. The Impulse FI one might not have the hole in the front right of the head for the mech fuel pump, but going into a luv with electric pump that wouldn't be bad anyway. I doubt you are going to run into one of them though, MUCH more likely to find a PUP, S10, or Trooper with a G200 in it.

I am just looking at all my options right now and the cost is a big factor.
800xl, did you ever put in the 2.3L (or was it a 2.6?).

I saw off of this site: http://remanufactured.com/Chevrolet_4_Cylinder_Engines.htm

I'm mainly trying to see the plus and minus of staying with the stock motor, or a G200, or a 2.3L.
