A co-worker has some used slicks he wants to sell but I dont know how to tell if they are any good. I thought there were holes in them to tell that and I did see those but how deep should they be? Are they trash when it wares past those holes? He only wants $50 for the pair so it seems hard to pass up for what I need them for.

they should have depth holes in them. what brand are they? they dont go much past the holes before you are into the threads.

They are Good Years. The depth holes are deep enough to stick my finger nail into without hitting the bottom of the hole.

sounds like there is a lot of life left in them... they sound like they are practically unused BUT... the main thing you should check is that the rubber is still soft.... it should feel kind of spongy. Also check for cracks in the sidewall on both sides. They can and will crack and get hard even if they spend their entire life in a garage and never see the light of day. $50 is a good deal if everything checks out. After the holes are gone you will get about 2 decent size burnouts on them before you hit threads.
