Ok, so with my 4x4 lets say I wanted to swap out the whole drivetrain, engine outward. I'm looking at doing this in the summer. Lets say I want to run a 350 SBC with a Turbo 350 trans. How do I know which transfer case I'll need? For example, 208 vs 231 etc? Also, if I want to go with toyota front end, what kind of a rear end do I need? Do I need the front suspension and steering from the toyota as well if I do this? Please let me know! Thank you!!

Hey beetle,
As for which T-case to use it all depends on the wedding band, If your going to run a th350 the options from the factory are...np 231(crap)..np 208(OK).. np 205(BEST)...nvg241(newer models) A T-case is no good without a way to mate it to the tranny. Also If you are running a th350 make sure it is a 4x4 model there is a difference(Square end instead of tapered). Ok now for the axles, As long as the gear ratios match it dosn't matter, if you can mount em you can run em. You can run a toy front and a 14 bolt rear if you wanted as long as the ratios matched.Ok now steering, Not sure I know you have to get the geometry right or it won't work. As for parts needed dunno, I'm sure someone will thou.
Hope this helps....

Dave

In my longbed Luv 4X4, I'm running stock width, mid 70's Jeep CJ-5 axles. A disc brake Dana 44 front is best but a Dana 30 works, and is what I have. Luv has a 400 small block and a passenger car, short shaft, Turbo 350 trans.

My transfer case is a divorced Dana 20 (Jeep/Ford/International) When it blows, I have a divorced New Process 205 waiting. This 205 was from a late 60's or early 70's Dodge PU. Another decent divorced case is the Dana 300, it's a step up from a Dana 20 and wll hold up to a mildly built small block.

A 205 is the best production T-case, it is gear driven and has no chain to stretch. I ran a 205 in my severely abused, sand dragged, paddle-tire'd, big block '72 Blazer for several years with no problems.

The divorced transfer case allowed me a longer front driveline for a better driveline angle (My Luv has 8" or 9" of suspension lift). I also lowered my rear transmission mount 2-1/2" (flipped the stock one upside-down) to allow the transfer case be dropped the same 2-1/2".

The below picture is before I lowered the t-case.
