Does anybody know what 5-speed trans will fit in a stock 2WD '80 Luv?

I know Izusu made one that will bolt up to a stock 1.8 block and will fit in a stock 2WD Luv but I can't remember which...I just tried a search and got nowhere.

I just got an automatic rear-end to improve my gear ratio and I want to put in a 5-speed while I have it in my shop up in the air - to finish it off before it goes in to be painted.

Mine's a long-bed, so driveline length - I've been told - shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks guys.

CYA.

I believe it is a 81-86/87 Isuzu P'up trans you need.

would that be the same trans to fit in a 4x4? To the t-case?

A 2wd trans won't bolt to a t-case and I'm not sure if an Isuzu 4x4 of those same year models will fit the luv t-case either. You'd probably need to use an Isuzu trans and t-case. If our resident Isuzu Encyclopedia (800XL) is around, I'm sure he probably knows.

The thing with Isuzu's is that with the 4x4 models the t-case is integrated into the tranny, in other words it's all one unit. is your dealing with a 2wd you just need to get ahold of a 5-speed from a 81-87 2wd P'up. should bolt right up to the G180Z in the Luv. hope that helps you, and if i'm wrong 800XL will be here soon i'm sure

I think that about covers it really. 4x4 and 2WD models have a different transmission with the tcase built into 4x4 trannies. It would work in a 2WD truck, but you'd have a front output shaft you wouldn't need and a Hi/Lo/4x shifter to cut a hole for.

I forget exactly when Isuzu started putting a 5 spd in the PUP, but if you find one in a truck from 81-87 it should fit. The main problem really comes down to the clutch. I think anything with a 2.6L motor has a different clutch, hydraulic activated. 87 was the first year the 2.6L appeared so any 5 spd prior to that should be setup for a cable clutch just like the 80 LUV.

After 87 it gets a bit fuzzier. You can still find a cable clutch in Isuzus with the 2.3L motor, so its worth looking.

Oh yeah, the clutch size is a bit bigger on Isuzus made after 81. If you want to use that rather than the stock LUV clutch you might need to find a flywheel from an 81+ LUV/Isuzu or an 80 4x4 LUV. I believe anything with a 1.8L or 1.9L should have a flywheel that fits the LUV motor.

On the off chance you see one, you could look at the trans in an Isuzu Impulse or I-Mark too. They don't show up very often though.

my 5er is out of an 82 p'up which happens to bolt right up w/ the exception of needing to shorten the driveline(from the p'up) by 2 1\16" it took me about 2 hrs to do the swap after i had the driveline ready.

I have a 5spd in my 79 with the 1.8, got it from a 79 Izuzu MarkIV car. Everything same, will need front input yolk from a 86 or so Pup. You won't have to cut anything.

I am pretty sure that the car was sold in the US. I found it in a Pick-N-Pull In Redding,CA. I think it was kind of like a Sentra, 4dr sedan, same motor as I have the carb from it on my LUV now. The MarkIV was on the rear quarter panel or trunk. The only odd thing about the 5spd is the shifter is at a different angle. I have driven my LUV dailey for about 10 years now, so I had to get used to the shifter being a little different, but that is all. Much better cruising speed and less rpm

that tranny sounds like a sweet little swap if you don't have to shorten the driveshaft. I'll be checking around my local yards... anyone got a hollanders manual???

OH man do I wish, I worked for a dismantler for 5 years and I would spend huors looking at the 20 or so Hollanders this guy had. All the way back to the early 60s, and up to about 82 when I quit. They even cover Canadian models that look the same, but have different trim packages.

If I remember right the darn books were about $99.00. CD would be ok, but need to cover everything. There aren't many people who know how to read them unless they have been exposed to the dismantling world, at least from my experience. Heck I used to win money from people betting on stuff I found. Like there is a spindle that fits Ford and Chevy 4x4s, and a Capri made in 67.

so i guess since the transfer case are attached to the actual tranny a 86 4x4 trooper 5 speed wont work either?

Physically fit, yes, but you'd have a front output shaft and a t-case shifter to deal with. I also believe it is a bit longer than the 2WD 5spd trans, so driveline length could be more of an issue. I have yet to measure a 5 spd out of a 2WD PUP or I-mark either, could be they are much closer on length than the 4x4 models.

Just to add some new info I've learned since this thread was last active, the 88-89 Impulse transmission uses a hydraulic clutch setup. It would require some real creativity to get it to work with a 78 and up cable clutch LUV, but I think it could be done. On the other hand, it should be much easier to bolt it up to a 76-77 hydraulic clutched LUV though. It also matches the length of the stock 4spd, so driveline length and mounts won't be an issue. The splines on the output shaft are different though, so the yoke needs to be changed to something that fits. It uses a standard size, same as plugs into the back of a TH250 LUV auto trans, which is just like a TH350 I'm told.

For 72-75 trucks I have still not worked out a solution. The starter is the main problem, it is on the other side on the early luvs. If the rear motor plate that the trans mounts to from a later year luv will fit, you might be able to relocate starter and use an Impulse or Isuzu pup trans.

ok i know this has been over and over thats why this thread is back alive. but when i searched last night after making this post i saw that pup trannys work. so i went to the bone yard today and much to my surprise, i found a 87 pup 2wd with a 5 speed. i have a 79 lwb 2wd does anybody know how difficult this would be? the pup is a swb. would i need the yoke or would it mount up to it? the guy at the yard said the truck will be there for a few more months before going to the crusher so i need to move on it if it is a relatively easy install. tell you how difficult it is to find stuff for the luv at the bone yards here in louisiana. today was the first time in 4 yrs i saw a pup and it is the first time in probably 10yrs. i saw an impulse. hell i havent seen one in so long, other then pics on here, i walked right past it and said damn that was an impulse. but any who thanks or the input.

Is the transfer case part of the rear tail housing for the 5 speed. I know on my 4 speed 4x4, the transfer case isn't part of the main case and does in fact, unbolt.
